Chapter 8: The Truth Be Told

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

"You know she's not gonna be happy to see you, man," Tala said as he rung the doorbell at Jules' house the next morning.

"I know." Kai had insisted on coming with Tala even though he was strongly against the idea. It wouldn't help the girls trust in him at all. Unfortunately for him, Kai had been waiting outside his house when he left. The opening of the door disrupted Tala's thoughts. A tall girl with amazingly green eyes and chest length brown hair with blonde and red streaks stood and stared at the two boys.

"What is he doing here?" Her green eyes looked anxiously at Tala. It took him a minute to answer since he was busy looking her up and down. She was dressed in a short red plaid schoolgirl style skirt, a black Led Zepplin t-shirt, and black knee-high boots.

"Uh…" Tala stuttered. He adverted his eyes to the ground hoping that she didn't notice his approval of her.

"I need to talk to her," Kai cut in, drawing Jules' attention away from the blushing red head.

"She's gonna be pissed," Jules shrugged, moving to let the boys enter the house.

            "I'm prepared," Kai said.

They followed Jules upstairs to a large room that was wall-to-wall posters. There was no way you would be able to pick out what color the walls actually were since they were plastered with old movie posters and band posters. There were two couches that looked as if they had time warped from the seventies and an old wooden rocking chair that was at the moment occupied by a very sad looking blonde reading a magazine.

"We have company," Jules stated, gaining the other girl's attention. Sapphire eyes locked in surprise with cool silver. Tala and Kai took a seat on the brown, gold, and orange couch while Jules occupied the flowered one. "Time to start explaining."

"I don't remember inviting him," she pointed to Kai.

"I need to talk to you, Amara. Or should I say Edie," Kai said coldly, his eyes never leaving hers.

"I don't feel the need right now," Amara replied curtly and then turned her attention to Tala. "You probably have a million questions right now but please let me explain first." Tala nodded eagerly wanting her to continue. She removed the short blonde wig, allowing her long red hair to flow freely.

"My name is Amara Jones. I'm sure he told you that last night after we ran off. So I'm sure I can skip the whole story of how Kai and I met as well." Again Tala nodded. "I didn't mean to trick you into thinking I was someone else…it just sort of happened. When you asked me my name I panicked and gave you my middle name instead of my first. The wig was so if Kai saw me from a distance he wouldn't recognize me right away. I wasn't planning on meeting anyone else. But when you told me you knew Kai, I knew you could help me get in to see him. I also enlisted Jules to help me deceive you as well. Please don't think poorly of her for what I did."

"No, never," Tala said quickly, his brain still trying to process all the information. "I understand why you did what you did."

"Thank you," Amara sighed. "Is there anything I've left out?" The question was directed to Jules who seemed to be content on staring at Tala. "Jules?!?"

"Umm…nope I think you covered just about everything," she stammered. Tala noticed that her cheeks were red but he wasn't quite sure why.

"Why did you come here?" The question came from Kai who had been sitting patiently for Amara to finish so he could ask her.

"I told you that last night," Amara replied, her expression blank. Kai could see the emotions in her eyes. "I wanted some answers from you and then I would go back home. But I think I know all I need to now."

"You don't understand the situation," Kai remarked as if he was talking to a small child.

"Then help me understand," Amara snapped. She was now on her feet prepared to fight him. Not physically though. "Keeping me in the dark won't keep me here forever."

Kai was on his feet as well ready to square off with her. "You don't want to leave! Admit it, you'd stay anyway."

"Why you arrogant bastard," Amara gaped. She felt the strong urge to slap his perfect face. "I don't want anything else from you."

"You seemed pretty eager last night," Kai smirked. He didn't know what had come over him. He was starting to sound like his grandfather that thought was enough to send all his anger whooshing out. The pain in Amara's eyes got even more visible but her face remained like stone.

"What's happened to you? You sound like that bastard of a grandfather of yours," Amara snapped. Something in Kai's eyes flickered and he grabbed her arm pulling her towards him.

"Never compare me to him," he hissed against her cheek. His sudden burst of anger shocked Amara so much that her own anger evaporated.

"Kai you're hurting me," Amara whispered. Kai immediately let go of her wrist. He could already see the bruise that was going to be there.

"I'm sorry," Kai said quickly but Amara was already starting to move away from him. "I…"

"What's happened to you?" she pleaded.

"I don't know," Kai hung his head. He knew he had lost her now. How could she forgive him if he knew he would never be able to forgive himself? Appalled with his own behavior, Kai turned to leave the room. Suddenly Amara's arms snaked around his waist from behind to hug him.

"I want to understand," she breathed against the soft material of his brown leather jacket. "Help me understand." They stood there for a few moments, Amara's head resting comfortably on Kai's back. Kai lifted Amara's hands from his waist, releasing himself from her hold, but instead of leaving he turned and wrapped her in his arms.

"We should talk about this without the flying insults," Kai spoke against her hair.

"We can try," Amara chuckled, looking up at him. Her head rested nicely against his chest. It took all of Kai's will power not to lean down and kiss her. Instead he led her over to the couch and sat down with her beside him.

"So you already met my grandfather and you obviously know that I'm engaged to marry Jules?" Amara nodded and Kai continued. "See my great grandmother Lady Catherine needed to choose an heir and for some reason she chose me. The thing was the only way I can get my inheritance is if I'm married. Of course I can't just marry anyone." Kai huffed. "According to the law I had to marry someone of certain blood type and blood line…it was an annoying process but my grandfather finally picked someone."

"You mean you had no say in any of it?" Amara asked. Kai shook his head.

"You met my grandfather. Everything is his way unless I want a beating," Kai shuttered at the memories.

"But you're bigger than he is. He's an old man, you're young and strong," Amara practically screamed at him. The thought of Kai being beaten scared her. Images of what his childhood must have been like filled her mind. Amara could feel the tears forming in her eyes.

"If I stood up to him it would just make my life even worse."

"When was the last time he hit you?" Amara hesitated to ask but she wanted to know.

"It doesn't matter," Kai shrugged off her question. She sighed and one single tear rolled down her cheek.

"Kai, when did he hit you last?" Amara asked again, placing her hand on his. Kai knew he had to answer this time. He couldn't stand seeing her upset over it.

"Last night," Kai answered but he could bear to look her in the eye. He felt as if he had let her down by not standing up to his grandfather.

"Where?"

            "My back."

"Can I see?" She said it so quietly that Kai could barely make out what she was asking of him.

            "I don't think you want to…"

"He did it because of me," Amara squeezed his hand causing Kai to look at her. "I want to see."

"Amara," Kai started to talk her out of it but she was already moving to remove his leather jacket. He then willingly allowed her to take off his black t-shirt. He knew any struggle on his part would just cause himself pain. The wounds were still too new and too sore. Once the shirt was discarded Amara motioned for him to turn so she could have a view of his back.

Amara's hand flew to her mouth. Horrible red slashes cover Kai's back. They were still pink and very sore looking. They hadn't been there before neither had the phoenix tattoo across his shoulder blades. It was a gorgeous fiery phoenix with its wings spread out across his shoulders. In its beak it held a chain with an A pendant on it.

"You never had scars on your back when you were at my house," Amara traced her finger along one of the wounds. Kai flinched under the light touch. "What did he hit you with?"

"A leather belt. He never hit my back before," Kai replied. "He usually hit me a lot lower. This time he said something about the scars being a reminder to you."

"Well now it's impossible for me not to blame myself," Amara sighed. "I'm so sorry." Amara leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on his tattoo, the only place where there wasn't a gash. "I wouldn't have been such a sass if I knew he would do this to you." She kissed him again on the far tip of one of the phoenix's wings.

"Amara?" Kai groaned as she placed another kiss on his other shoulder. He turned to face her. "I thought you didn't want me anymore."

"I thought that too," Amara answered, her eyes flickering down to his lips. Kai closed the gap between them. He gently cupped the back of her neck with his hand and brought her lips to his. At first she didn't respond, which made Kai worry that she was going to pull away. Instead she pulled him closer to her.

"Is this what you want?" Kai asked against her lips.

"Yes," she whispered, kissing him hard.

"Well this is quite the switch isn't it?" Tala's sarcastic voice came from somewhere behind them.

"I'm glad we left the room when we did," Jules replied. Kai reluctantly stopped but still held onto Amara's waist.

"Yeah when did you guys leave?" Kai asked.

"I think you guys were still mad at each other at that point," Jules answered moving into the room to take a seat on the other couch.

"Obviously you've gotten over that little bump," Tala remarked following Jules.

"I think we have," Amara smiled pulled Kai in for one more lingering kiss.
