Chapter 12: To Better Society…Really

"Shit!" Kai was on his feet in seconds. He stormed down to the dock, Rei and Tyson behind him for support. Tala was already there, standing off against two guys that Kai didn't recognize. The one guy was taller than Kai with black hair in a crew cut and was fairly well built, while the other one was a lot shorter and stocky with blonde shaggy hair.

"Is there a problem?" Kai asked, crossing his arms against his chest.

"This is between me and the little lady, thanks," the larger of the two guys answered. The guy grabbed Amara around the waist and pulled her against him so her back was leaning on his chest. "You guys can just move on."

Kai was seeing red as he saw the other guy touching his girlfriend but before he could make a move to get the guy off her, Amara took matters into her own hands.

"I told you to leave me alone," Amara snapped at him.

In one fluid motion, Amara swung out of the guys grip and made a swing with her fist for his face. The larger guy's friend noticed what Amara was up to and stopped her fist mid swing but he didn't plan for her to try hitting with her other fist. Before anyone really knew what was happening the three of them toppled over the side of the dock into the bottomless looking lake.

Kai instinctively lunged forward but there was no way he could stop Amara from falling in with the guys.

Meanwhile under the water, Amara was struggling to find the surface. One of the guys had landed on top of her as they fell into the water. She could feel the guys struggling around her. Suddenly out of nowhere she got kicked in the back of the head and everything went black.

Above, the two guys had surfaced and were sheepishly swimming to shore instead of trying to get back on the dock where they knew they would meet the hard fist of the fiery blue haired boy.

"Some things not right here," Tala said as they all waited anxiously for Amara's red head to break the still water.

"Shouldn't she have come up by now?" Cat asked anxiously clinging on to Nicholai. Kai could only stand their motionless.

Taking matters into her own hands, Jules dove expertly off the end of the dock where Amara had fallen in. Through the murky water she managed to find the body of her unconscious friend and pull her up to the surface.

"She's not breathing," Jules shouted to them, making sure Amara's head was above the water. She swam carefully to the ladder where Tala was waiting to help lift Amara onto the dock. Once Jules had past her friend safely to Tala, she climbed up the ladder herself. She immediately began mouth to mouth on her friend.

"Is anyone else oddly turned on by this?"

"Ew, Tyson you perv," Cat shrieked letting go of Nicholai's arm long enough to whack Tyson up the head. "You are so lucky that Kiki is over there."

"Hey where is Kiki?" Nicholai turned around looking for his twin.

"Oh no, guys look." All eyes followed the direction that Cat was now pointing.

It appeared that Kai had slipped away after his unconscious girlfriend had been pulled from the water and was preparing to kick the crap out of the guys who had made her like this. They all stood there dumbfounded as Kai began to take on the two guys. The rest of the guys raced down the dock to their friend.

"Ah she's breathing," Jules said breathlessly a few moments later.

Amara coughed out the water that she had swallowed. "Kai?!?!"

"He's over there playing the part of the jealous boyfriend," Jules replied dryly. She could see Tala trying to pull Kai off the crew cut guy.

"Well he better save something for me." Before Jules could stop her, Amara was on her feet and storming down the dock.

"Kai, man you gotta stop," Tala demanded pulling his friend away from the guys.

"What for? They could have killed her damn it!" Kai snapped struggling in Tala's grip.

"Luckily I'm pretty resilient," Amara said tromping through the sand and walking right up to the crew cut guy. " I told you to leave me the hell alone."

The guy opened his mouth to say something but Amara hooked him under the jaw with her fist before he could get any words out. He fell to the ground from the force and surprise of the hit.

"Amara baby, can't we talk this out?" the guy whimpered from the ground. He cradles his jaw in his hand.

"Obviously talk doesn't work for you," Amara snapped back, obliviously to the looks she was getting from her friends. Especially the confused look from a certain silver-eyed boy. " I don' t want to see you. Now leave. I don't want to have to hit you again." Amara raised her fist threateningly and the guy crouched down lower in the sand.

"I thought we had something baby," the guy tried again to persuade her.

"Nothing! There was nothing!" Amara screamed at him. "Now stay the fuck away from me!"

"Amara?" Kai asked his voice full of hurt. Amara was afraid to turn and look at him. "What's going on?"

"Kai, I…" Before the sentence was complete the world around Amara went black.

Sirens sounded from the beach parking lot. Two paramedics came rushing towards the sandy beach.

"I had a feeling someone was going to need an ambulance but I wasn't sure who," Kiki said to them walking from the direction of the path from the cabin.

"I'm glad you went with your feeling," Tyson complimented his girlfriend.

Kai sat in the sand holding Amara on his lap. He had seem her collapsing and lunged for her before she could hit the sand. Moments later she was taken away from him and put on a stretcher and rushed to the closest hospital.

"She's awake now," the doctor came and told the group of teenagers that had filled the emergency waiting room. They all looked glum and tired but they had still waited for three hours for their friend to wake up. "I recommend that you see her in pairs or threes so you don't overwhelm her." They all nodded.

"Who wants to go first?" Kiki asked taking charge.

"You know if I go first that she probably won't want to talk to anyone else after?" Kai said coldly noticing that everyone's eyes were on him.

" I think we wall agree that you should talk to her first, man," Tala answered for the group.

"Yeah go ahead," Cat urged him her head resting comfortably on Nicholai's shoulder. "We can wait." Kai nodded leaving the rest of his friends in the waiting room.

"I'm gonna head down to the cafeteria and grab a drink," Jules said. "Does anyone else want anything?" Everyone started to spit out orders at once. "Okay guys, I only have two hands."

"I'll go with you," Tala told her. He noticed that the smile fell from her face for a split second after he spoke.

She nodded and turned to leave the room. "You guys better not get mad if we get things messed up." Jules called back over her shoulder as Tala began to follow her at a distance. "Geez you think I can remember that many different drinks."

"That's why I'm with you," Tala spoke before he really had a chance to wager her reaction.

"I never asked you to come," she answered coldly.

"Maybe not with words but you wanted me to," Tala smirked hoping that she would lighten up a little. Jules stopped and spun around to face him causing Tala to almost crash right into her.

"You, Tala Valkov, are the biggest egotistical prat I have ever met," Jules snapped taking a few steps towards him. Tala instinctively stepped away from the enraged brunette until his back hit the wall. "You think just because you're rich, famous, and good-looking that you can get any girl you want." Jules emerald eyes flared with anger making it hard for Tala not to stare at them. Even though she was yelling at him, he kept thinking how beautiful she was. Tala wanted to smile at her but he knew that would just make her even angrier. "I am not gonna be another notch in your bedpost."

"Jules…" Tala tried to defend himself but she wouldn't let him. A poke in the chest with her index finger shut him up.

"It was only a kiss," Jules stated with an air of finality in her voice. "It means nothing and I owe you nothing." She took a step away from him before turning back in the direction that they had been heading. "It was only a kiss."

"Damn!" Tala hissed under his breath smiling admiringly as he watched the small girl storm away. It was the first time a girl had shot him down but instead of being pissed he found himself admiring her.

Amara looked up as Kai entered her hospital room. She smiled sadly to herself.

"I had a feeling they would send you in first," Amara spoke her thoughts as Kai took a seat beside her bed. He didn't say anything. He just stared at her. "I guess I should just talk then. So I…"

"Who is he?"

"Darren."

"Where did you meet him? Did you date him? What is he to you?"

"Had time to think about this have you?" Amara stared at him a little wide eyed.

"I just want to understand what I heard out there today," Kai answered sharply.

"Alright, well there's one thing you have to understand." Kai nodded for her to continue. "You were gone alright, I didn't know if I was ever going to see you again. Cat was worried that I was going to pull away from the world around me and contemplate suicide again. So she set me up with Darren."

"So you went out with him?"

"I went on a group date with Cat, Nicholai, and Darren. I wasn't alone with him or anything," Amara told him.

"But you still went out with the guy," Kai said again not letting that little detail drop.

"In a sense, yes, but I did it for Cat so she would get off my case. I was really starting to get sick of hearing about how anti-social I was," Amara rolled her eyes.

"Apparently she had told him about you and how I wasn't really looking for a relationship of any kind but a friend to spend time with or some other bull like that. I told him right away that if he touched me I would castrate him. Unfortunately he only laughed."

Amara paused and looked at her hands trying to think of what to say next. Kai was there to prompt her though.

"He touched you didn't he?" Amara nodded tears of regret stung her sapphire eyes.

"He tried to feel me up during the movie."

Kai watched a single tear roll down her tanned cheek. He stopped it with the back of his fingers before cupping her face in his hands. Amara's eyes shot up at the sudden touch. There was no anger in Kai's eyes towards her. They reflected the same pain that was in her own. The regret they both felt for what had happened six months earlier.

"You didn't let him get away with it did you?" Kai said with a half smile.

"Of course not," Amara smiled back. "I elbowed him in the stomach before I got up to leave but the dumb ass tried to pull me onto his lap and I 'accidentally' kneed him in the groin."

"You nasty nasty girl," Kai chided her with a smile. "You play dirty don't you?"

"Hmmm, usually I refrain from kicking a guy in the groin, " Amara mused. "In case they one day which to procreate but this world does not need little Darrens running around. I didn't it to better society really."

"I'm sure you did."

"Of course, I'm always putting others needs before mine," she smirked.

"What if it benefits you too?" Kai asked moving a little closer till their noses were almost touching.

"Then I'm always willing to help." Amara tilted her head and closed the gap between their lips.

pishcules: I'm glad you thought the dream was freaky because that's what I wanted. The bikini that I described actually was modeled by a friend of mine but her's has blue where I described pink. It was just more appropriate if Amara wore pink since she's not a big fan of that color. Like Kiki said, what guy doesn't like a girl in a bikini ;) Thanks for the review.
