Chapter 17: Inevitable

0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

"Why did I have to fall for the biggest, most insensitive prick in the entire world?" Jules whined burying her face into a pillow. Kiki put a reassuring hand on Jules' shoulder.

"We can't really help who we like," Cat added. "I regret some of the guys I dated in high school but I can't take that back."

"But I don't regret what I feel fro him," Jules lifted her head from the pillow long enough to say.

The girls had been listening to Jules bitch about Tala for the last half an hour but they still hadn't been able to get out of her what really went on that made her so upset. As much as Amara valued her friendship to Jules and wanted to see her friend happy she found herself very distracted and wanting to know what the guys were up to. She had overheard Kiki tell Kai that he needed to go the beach before Tala drowned himself. That didn't sound too good.

A knock at the door drew Amara's attention back to the present. Since she was closest to the door it was only right that she be the one to get it. Amara opened the door to find Kai standing there with an icepack against his jaw.

"What the hell…" Amara stared wide-eyed at him as he put a hand to her mouth to cut her off. With the other hand he pulled her out into the hall and closed the door behind him.

"Please stay calm and I will explain," Kai whispered harshly his hand still against her mouth. Amara nodded her eyes still round from surprise. Slowly Kai brought his hand down from her mouth.

"What happened to your jaw? What's the matter with Tala? Does that hurt?" Amara reached up to move the icepack. "Who hit you? What…" Kai's hand was promptly clamped over her mouth once again.

"That was not calm," he told her flatly not removing his hand. "Tala hit me, he fought with Jules, and yes it hurts." Kai answered her questions. "He's gone." Amara cocked an eyebrow not too sure who he was talking about. "Tala." Kai added realizing she was unsure.

"What?" Amara managed to shriek despite Kai's hand. At last he removed his hand and allowed her to talk freely. "What happened? Where did he go?"

Kai breathed in and exhaled before telling her. "He said it was because he couldn't sit around and watch me marry Jules."

"So he hit you?" Amara asked rubbing her thumb gently over his bruised jaw.

"No," Kai replied wincing slightly. "He hit me for a completely different reason."

"Of which you're not going to tell me," Amara added still inspecting his jaw. Her expression softened. "Well at least you admitted that it hurt."

Kai smiled at her. "What can I say? The guy does have a nasty right hook."

"Aw you poor thing," Amara cooed as if she was talking to a child but there was a hint of sarcasm. She leaned in and kissed is jaw right where the purple bruise had formed. "There all better." Kai made a move to kiss her on the lips but she pushed him back. "Not now. We have more important things going on right now."

Amara could feel his silver eyes glaring at her but she chose to ignore it.

"Fine," he grunted. "But what can we really do to help? Tala is gone."

"I doubt he got far," Amara concluded thoughtfully. "After all he doesn't know the area and he probably didn't come back to the house for any of his stuff."

"Yeah, you're probably…" Kai was cut off by a loud crash coming from the kitchen. The couple turned and looked down the hallway. Amara peeked around the corner. Tyson was standing in the middle of the kitchen holding a pan in his hand.

"Sorry guys," he said when he saw their heads peek around the corner at him. "The one I wanted was a little buried." Kai nodded in understanding and pulled Amara back into the hallway.

"What's he doing?" she asked a little concerned. Kai could see there was a little more than just concern playing across her beautiful features.

"Making dinner," Kai shrugged trying to brush it off. Amara was not going to let it slip.

"The girls were suppose to make you guys dinner," Amara frowned her eyes facing down the hall towards the kitchen.

"We're taking over," Kai told her, again trying to advert her attention back to the problem with Tala and Jules. "Back to…"

"It was suppose to be special," Amara's frown deepened.

"Well it will be special coming from us guys," Kai assured her. "You girls need to deal with Jules and relax." Kai's hands were on her shoulders trying to direct her attention back onto him. "Okay?"

Amara looked up to meet his eyes. He was getting a headache just trying to decipher all the different emotions her blue eyes held. Her momentary emotions were easy since she was still frowning at him.

"Okay," her response was reluctant.

"Good," Kai pulled her forward and placed a kiss on her temple. "I'll come get you guys when dinner is ready."

Amara nodded looking a little stunned and turned to go back into the bedroom where are the other girls were still gathered. Kai stood in the same spot even after she had closed the door.

He hated to admit it but Tala was right. He was only hurting himself and Amara by carrying on with their relationship. There was no way his grandfather would let him get away with marrying her. Even if they managed to pull it off, Voltaire had people working for him all over the world. It would only be a matter of time before they were found. Amara would no doubt be killed and he would be severely punished. It was a no win situation as far as he could see.

Amara didn't say anything when she reentered the bedroom. The other girls were still situated the same way and all heads turned to look as Amara sat down again.

She hated being the one to have to tell Jules about Tala. It would have been easier if Kai had just done it himself but Amara knew in the end it would be better coming from her. All and all she wasn't that surprised. She knew this was coming before any of them did. Tala's choice of timing was a little different than expected but there was no real shock about it.

Amara moved up the bed so she was closer to Jules. Her friends emerald eyes, which were red and puffy from crying, were begging her to tell whatever she had to tell. Amara took Jules' hands in hers and inhaled. All the possible ways to phrase the news were running through her head at a mile a minute.

"Jules," Amara's eyes looked down at their hands. Jules gave her hand a small squeeze urging her to continue. "Honey…Tala…"

"If he drowned himself…I'll…" Jules started frantically.

"No…no," Amara stopped her quickly. "He didn't drown himself. He's fine…well as far as I know he's fine."

"Well then what is it? Where is he?" All the attention was turned to Amara.

"He left."

"He left…" Jules repeated looking a little dumbstruck. Her eyes were quickly adverted down to her hands, which Amara was still holding. "Did he say where he was going or when he's coming back?"

"I don't think he's coming back," Amara replied slowly trying to get Jules to look at her. Jules lips formed and 'o' but no words came out.

The other girls all looked at Amara. She could tell that they wanted answers as well. Amara didn't feel like giving up the information until Jules gave the okay. The last thing she wanted was to overwhelm her friend.

After a few minutes of silence Jules finally spoke up.

"Do you guys think I could be alone for a bit?"

This wasn't quite what they were expecting but the four girls complied and quietly left the room.

"You really think it's okay to leave her in there alone?" Kiki whispered to Amara as they walked down the hall to the kitchen.

"Keeks, I don't think she's suicidal," Amara replied. "Jules is smarter than that."

"Yeah I guess you're right," Kiki shrugged.

"Out!" Tyson shrieked at them as soon as they entered the large kitchen.

"Tyson must you screech like a girl?" Cat grumbled rubbing her temples.

"We're trying to make you girls dinner," Tyson answered pushing the girls down the stairs to the boy's bedrooms and the downstairs family room. "It's supposed to be a surprise."

"Fine," Kiki snapped back at him. "We get it. You don't have to shove."

"Sorry babe," Tyson gave her a quick kiss and then closed the door behind them.

During the chaos Amara managed to slip past Tyson and head up to the loft and the comfiest bed in the house. She was feeling a little drained after the trying events of the day. All she wanted was some time alone to think and maybe catch a few extra Zs.

Amara opened to door to the large master bedroom and stared at the inviting king sized bed for a moment. She smiled to herself. Sleep was just what she needed. It would be a time to forget about her meeting with Lady Catherine and Tala's abrupt departure. Of course part of her wanted to be downstairs spending a little alone time with Kai but even that was starting to wear on her. It wasn't that she didn't want to be with him. The problem was being with him was only going to make things harder when she left.

The bed was just as soft as she remembered and her eyes easily slipped closed. She tried her best to block out thoughts of the day. She could hear Tyson and the rest of the guys working below her in the kitchen. They were talking and there was an almost constant banging and bumping of cupboards opening. One noise sounded awfully close and Amara's eyes shot open. She was facing the small balcony and there was someone trying to climb over the railing.

"Who the hell?" Amara climbed out of bed and walked over to the sliding glass door. The person's face was covered with a black hood from their sweatshirt and was too preoccupied with pulling up their body to notice Amara approaching.

"Get off!" Amara snapped making a move to push the intruder. "Ahhh!" She shrieked as the person grabbed her arm.

"Shut it!" He growled. Amara immediately closed her mouth. She knew that voice.

"Tala?!?" She pulled the hood away from his face with her free hand. "What are you doing?"

"Isn't it obvious?" he grunted still trying to get the rest of his body safely onto the balcony. "I'm checking how sturdy this railing is."

"Funny," Amara rolled her eyes. She grabbed his arm and helped to brace Tala as he climbed over the railing. "Can't you just use the door?"

"As far as they're concerned I was never here," Tala replied briskly. He walked over to the door and closed it. "You on the other hand I need to talk to."

"Me too. I would like to know why you're leaving now? I thought we had decided I would leave first?" she crossed her arms against her chest.

"I know we said that but I can't stay here," Tala told her running his hand through is messed red hair. "I don't see how you can stand it." He put his hands on her shoulders and gave her a small shake. "Why drag it out? Get it over with and start forgetting him." His turquoise eyes bore into her. Amara couldn't stand to look at him. She knew it was foolish to stay but she would leave when she felt the time was right. He gave her another shake trying to make her look at him.

"Stop it," Amara said quietly her head down. Tala could barely make out what she said.

"Why prolong the inevitable?"

"Stop it Tala!" Amara snapped. This time he heard her. "Don't you think I know that!" She wriggled free from his hold. "I've been prepared for this long before you entered the picture. I know what I have to do and I will do it when I see fit."

"Fine," Tala put his hands up in defeat. "You don't have much time. Kai is suppose to be back in Russia in two days." Amara nodded staring off into the trees. "Amara…" His hands touched her shoulders again but this time his touch was gentle. "I'm sorry. I'm just frustrated about this whole thing. I…"

"I know." Amara looked up tears glistening in her sapphire eyes. "I am too but it will all be over soon."

"Well kinda soon," Tala shrugged offering her an apologetic smile. "I should go before someone decides to check up on you."

"Yeah," Amara nodded giving him a quick hug. "Bye."

"Later." He grinned at her and then hopped back over the railing.

Amara watched him reach the ground and put his hood back up as he walked back to the main road. She kept her eyes on him until he was completely out of sight.

"What are you doing out here?" Kai's voice came from behind her.

"Thinking," she answered without turning around.

"About what?" Strong arms wrapped around her waist. Kai's chin rested comfortably against her shoulder.

"Nothing important," Amara shrugged. "How's dinner coming?"

"As done as it will ever be," he smirked. "Come." He took her hand in his and led her down to the main floor.
