Chapter 18: Next to Leave

0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

The dinner that the guys made wasn't quite what Amara had imagined but she couldn't deny that they had done a good job. The conversation around the table wasn't so good though. No one seemed to know what to say. Everyone knew about Tala and none of them wanted to make things any worse for Jules, who never said one word throughout the meal. In fact she didn't eat much of the food placed in front of her. Amara watched her friend push the food around but that was about it.

After the awkward meal the group seemed to split up into smaller groups. Max, Rei, Nicholai, Kenny, Cat, and Mico went downstairs to watch a movie. Tyson and Kiki decided to go for a walk and slipped out the back door, while everyone was cleaning up the dishes. Kai disappeared leaving Amara and Jules to deal with the dishes that didn't fit in the dishwasher.

Jules attention was very focused on the sink of soapy water in front of her, while Amara was thinking hard of something to say to her friend. Jules never was one for sympathy.

"Don't bother," Jules stated numbly.

"What?" Amara asked looking to her friend for an answer. "I didn't say anything."

"I know," Jules replied. "Don't bother trying to come up with something to say. I don't want to hear it."

"Fair enough," Amara shrugged trying her best to turn her full attention to the dishes she was drying.

"What can you say?" Jules began to rant out her frustration. "What more can you say than 'I'm sorry' which would just sound completely lame." Amara did answer any of the questions knowing that it was better that Jules got all the feelings out. "And are you really sorry? I'm going to be miserable. I guess misery does love company…"

"Hold up," Amara snapped suddenly feeling the need to intervene. "Are you saying that I made Tala go away?"

"Well we both know that you can't have Kai," Jules turned to Amara and crossed her arms against her chest. "Why wouldn't you want to sabotage me and Tala?"

"Why?" Amara found herself choking on her words. Jules' accusation made her completely speechless. "Because you're my best friend and I would never wish ill on you. I knew I couldn't keep Kai even before you and Tala decided to hook up." Amara tried to keep her voice down just in case Kai was near. The less he knew about her inevitable departure the better. "The world is not suddenly out to get you."

"I didn't say anything about the world," Jules pointed out. "Just you."

"You've lost it," Amara threw up her arms in defeat. "I'm not going to win am I?"

"I don't want to hear any of your pathetic excuses," the small brunette replied not looking at Amara.

"Err!" Amara grumbled in her throat. "Fine! Think whatever you want. I don't really care." She threw down the dishtowel in her hand preparing to leave the room. "Enjoy marrying Kai." Amara headed for the stairs that lead to the loft. "Have a nice life." Feeling a little over dramatic, Amara slammed the door to the master suite.

"What as that all about?" Kai asked suddenly appearing in the doorway from the porch.

"Nothing," Jules huffed. "We had a little fight that's all."

"Oh." Kai made a move in the direction Amara had just gone.

"Don't follow her," Jules snapped. "Just leave her alone."

"She's my girlfriend," Kai growled back. "I think I have a right."

"Just leave it, Kai," Jules replied warningly.

"Wow, getting bossy already," Max, who had just come upstairs to refill his glass, added with a chuckle.

"Shut up!" Jules and Kai snapped at him in unison.

"Whoa!" Max jumped back and tried to protect himself with the refrigerator door. "Aren't you two pissy peas in a pod?"

"Out!" Jules hissed pointing to the door.

"I'm going. I just wanted some more pop." Max exclaimed then ran past Kai to the staircase leading down to the basement.

"Geez," Jules seethed under her breath. She tried to refocus her attention back on the dishes in front of her. Kai standing there silently was not helping her nerves any.

"I'm going upstairs," Kai informed her after a few minutes of silence. "And I don't need your permission." He added before Jules could stop him.

"Fine, but she won't want to talk to you," Jules said in a know it all tone that Kai didn't like at all. He knew that she was angry and was a little more good-natured than she appeared to be. "She has to get use to you not coming after her every time she's unhappy."

"Whatever," Kai grumbled and headed to the stairs. "Amara?" he knocked on the door and waited for a reply. "Can I come in?"

After a few minutes of nothing, where Kai began to worry that she wasn't in there, Amara opened the bedroom door ever so slightly.

"Can I come in?" Kai asked again this time to her face. She didn't look like she had been crying. Her sapphire eyes were as clear as ever but her expression was definitely not a happy one.

"I want to be alone," she stated firmly. Kai searched her eyes for a better answer but they weren't giving anything away.

"You…"

"I'm fine really," Amara cut in before he had a chance to say anything else to her. "I want some time alone that's all." Kai's brow furrowed. "Don't look at me like that." Amara gave him a small smile and a playful shove. "Don't worry about me, I'll be fine."

"Okay," Kai agreed tentatively. "I'll see you later then."

"Bye," Amara replied quickly making a move to close the door.

Unfortunately Kai wasn't going to make it that easy for her. He stopped her from closing it by purely being stronger and leaned in to kiss her. Kai brought his hand up to capture the back of her neck to deepen the kiss but Amara pulled back and closed the door before Kai could say anything else to her. He stood outside the door a little shell-shocked but soon it pasted and he headed back downstairs leaving Amara alone just like she wanted.

Amara leaned against the door and sighed heavily. She didn't want to cut off the kiss but she knew she had to or else it would just make things harder. It was time for her to leave. Tala had taken his turn and now it was hers. She had been packing her bag when Kai knocked on the door. It was time for Amara Jones to disappear for a while.

Amara stayed in her room for the rest of the night. No one else came to bother her, which was good considering she would have just sent them away. Everything was set in her mind. She would leave while everyone was sleeping. That would mean less questions and less having to make up lame answers that would probably just be lies anyways.

Deciding it was best to get a little sleep, Amara set the alarm clock for 3 am. She hoped that everyone would be sleeping by then, especially Kai.

At three am her alarm clock beeped incisively. Amara slammed the snooze button, hoping it wouldn't have woken up anyone but her. She grabbed her suitcase that was pre-packed and headed down stairs. The house was dark with no sounds of movement. Amara heaved a small sigh of relief knowing that everyone else in the house was sleeping.

Something inside of Amara wanted to go down to the basement where Kai was sleeping and see him one more time. As much as she wanted to there was something else telling her that she shouldn't. What good would come of her going down there? It would only make it harder to leave. Regardless of what her head was telling her not to do, Amara found herself walking down the stairs to the basement.

Kai's room was at the end of the hall. Amara had no light just her memory of where the small step that led up to the bedrooms was and a hope that there were no foreign objects in the way. Surprisingly she made it to the door without incident. With a gentle push it creaked open. Amara could make out Kai's sleeping image on the bed. None of the furniture ever moved so that made it easy to find the bed. She crotched down beside it and stared at the sleeping face of the only boy she ever loved.

As always his blue gray bangs had fallen across his face hiding his eyes from view. Amara brushed the aside so she could see his face. A calming sensation flooded through her as she looked into his sleeping face. She leaned forward and kissed his lips gently trying her best not to disturb him. Then without a word she rose and headed back to the door.

"Why?" Kai's voice called to her in a gruff whisper just as she made it to the door.

"Bugger!" Amara hissed under her breath. She turned around to face him. He was now sitting up and as far as Amara could tell, he was glaring at her.

"Why are you leaving like this?" He asked again.

"I…I have to," Amara answered turning away from him once again. "I can't stay here any longer."

"Why?"

"Stop asking why," Amara snapped. "You know why. You of all people should know why. It's everyone else who doesn't know why."

"Is that why you're attempting to sneak out?" Kai asked as if he already knew the answer.

"Yes," she replied quickly. "I really don't feel like dealing with that."

"So I'm going to have to deal with it then?" Kai removed the blanket from his boxer-clad body and lifted himself from the bed. Amara moved back almost out of the room, her hand still resting on the doorknob.

"I had to deal with everyone after you disappeared. This makes us even."

"If you wanted to sneak out why did you come down here?" he asked her getting closer with every word. His left hand rested on the door jam just beside her head, while his right was holding onto the door by the knob where Amara's hand rested.

"I had a lapse of judgment." Amara said trying her best to keep up her indifferent façade.

"Really," Kai drawled. He was close enough to touch her but he held back. "Do you love me?" Amara turned planning to make a run for it but Kai reached out and caught her wrist. "Do you love me?"

"We've never talked about love before," she replied without looking at him. "Now is not really the time."

"You said it," Kai insisted pulling her to him. "I heard you."

"You must have imagined it." She snapped quickly denying it.

"I'm a light sleeper. I know what I heard."

"I can't…" Amara started but she trailed off in defeat. She looked downward to avoid is penetrating gaze.

"You can't what?"

"I can't love you."

I hope that's not too much of an evil cliff hanger for you but that just seemed the ideal place to end the chapter considering what's gonna happen next. I know I keep saying and saying that the end is near and then drag out more chapters but I guess I found more to write for the story lol. The end is near though…I can't drag this out forever. Thanks for reading my story and please review.
