Gwg: I came up with this fic after reading over Battlefield. This can be read as a companion piece, or a stand alone. Either way, it's not a oneshot and it probably won't be long. This does have some spoilers for the end of FMA I think, not so sure about that...anyways, read on!
Disclaimer: I do not own Fullmetal Alchemist, just this fanfiction and the idea that it circles around.
Return to the Battlefield
Prologue
Now and Then
Brigader General Roy Mustang
The name has a ring to it, I admit that much. It's always been my dream to move up in rank and to change the world around me. I'm doing that much, but not now. Now, I'm sitting in a hospital bed, watching as Riza cuts an apple for me. The wound on her shoulder has healed, and even though we know what happened, we don't speak of it. She told me that Edward was gone, whether he was dead or alive though, was unknown. Alphonse had his body back, but his memories of us were lost as well as his time searching for the Philosopher's Stone.
Everything is slowly going back to normal, although I know it'll never be the same. The Homunculi are gone, or at least that's what we believe. I can only hope that the reports concerning them were right. I've been here for a few days now, occassionally visited by my subordinates and a few friends. Things are changing in Central, and soon they believe that State Alchemists will no longer be needed. It's what I've been wanting since I was a child, but to hear those words spoken put it into perspective for me.
What will I become once the State Alchemists are no more? What will I do with my skills, my alchemy? I'm a Fire Starter and nothing more. I started the fire of a dream in a the head of a twelve year old boy. I started the fire of determination within his amber eyes concerning the State Alchemists and the Millitary. I wonder if I will ever be able to look within his dark amber eyes again, to see the same fire of determination that has been there since day one.
I can only pray that Alphonse will have some of his memories returned to him.
Two years later
I look up from my work as I hear the door open, expecting it to be Riza with more paper work as always. My dark obsidian eyes widen in surprise as they meet dark amber. He's changed since the last time I saw him. His hair is long and in its customary braid, he's taller and his outfit has changed as well.
"Hey General Useless, miss me?"
Gwg: And ya'll are probably gonna hate me for that. Ah well, you'll get over it eventually. The next chapter should be out soon, so don't fret! Until next time, ja ne.
