Lorelai Leigh Gilmore has learned that this world is built of nepotism and ought to be taken advantage of, and she learned this all on her first day.
"On the one hand," she tells her grandfather over her breakfast, "it should make me sad. On the other hand, I'm getting so much experience. I don't know if I would have ever gotten this opportunity if I hadn't been dating Logan -- or if I had gotten it, would it have been because I'm a Gilmore?"
"It very well ought to have been!" thunders her grandfather with an indignant air.
"That's my point, Grandpa. Maybe I just have to accept that people will hand me things. Once I'm given them, though, well." And Rory leans back in her chair, eyes shining. This is her excited face, and her grandfather knows it. "I'm going to work twice as hard as anybody else there. I'm going to be amazing. I'll turn the paper around. When I leave, they'll wonder what they'll ever do without me!"
"What will they do without you, Rory?"
"I don't know! That's my point. I'm going to be good for Stanford, just as good as Stanford's gonna be for me."
She stabs a Danish with her fork. Her grandfather beams proudly over his coffee cup. Rory Gilmore's going places; with a hall pass handy, true, but she's still got a ways to travel.
