Apparently he and his family had a falling out when he was 17 (they believe in all this "pureblood" nonsense and Sirius, thankfully, is against all that) and the Potters took him in as a sort-of second son.
Well, I've got to draw up some study schedules for Maren and myself. We've learned so much these past seven years, and NEWTs are supposed to be torture!
