Wake me up when September Ends

This is my first try at one of these. Hope ya like it. It's about a certain police officer hearing a certain song and being observed by yet another familiar cop. Told from the point of view of the observer.

Wake me up When September Ends

He was sitting alone at his desk when she came in. A radio was playing nearby to keep him company as he used the time to catch up on paperwork. As she turned to leave, the opening notes of a familiar song came to her ears. It was the expression on the other's face when the lyrics began that froze her. It was a tightening around his eyes, as though the song spoke to him.

"Summer has come and passed,

the innocent can never last.

Wake me up when September ends."

She stood and watched and listened. The other didn't cry, but his expression confirmed that this song did indeed speak to a part of him, a part that was still searching for something he had lost.

"Like my father come to pass,

seven years has gone so fast.

Wake me up when September ends."

The man had stopped working when he heard the opening notes of the song and now sat gazing off into space as though seeing whatever it was he so desperately needed. Unseen, she continued to watch and listen. On the radio the song continued.

"Here comes the rain again,

falling from the stars.

Drenched in my pain again,

Becoming who we are.

As my memory rests,

But never forgets what I lost,

Wake me up when September ends."

Inspector Lisa Sheridan stood and watched her partner without speaking as the song continued. She began to see a different side to the man who had, over the course of their time together, become her friend. It had been five years since he had cut off contact with the Halliwell sisters, but it could not have been plainer now that with that severing, a part of Darryl Morris had been lost as well, otherwise the lyrics of the song wouldn't have affected him so deeply.

"Summer has come and passed,

the innocent can never last.

Wake me up when September ends.

Ring out the bells again,

Like we did when Spring began.

Wake me up when September ends.

Here comes the rain again,

Falling from the stars.

Drenched in my pain again,

Becoming who we are.

As my memory rests,

But never forgets what I lost,

Wake me up when September ends."

Sheridan stood gazing at her friend and partner, thinking on all that had happened in the years since Darryl had parted ways with the Halliwells. He hadn't been the same, burying himself in his work, becoming more and more distant with everyone, even his family. But to see him now, laid bare by the lyrics on the radio, it could not have been clearer that, whatever his reasons for parting with the Halliwells, he was made incomplete by it. It was clear to the watching Sheridan that, whatever his relationship with the Halliwells had been when it began, it had obviously deepened into a close friendship, which Darryl quite obviously longed to regain but couldn't think how it might be done. Sheridan stood and listened as the last verse of the song began.

"Like my father come to pass,

twenty years has gone so fast.

Wake me up when September ends.

Wake me up when September ends.

Wake me up when September ends."

As the last notes of the song faded away, Sheridan saw the tears on her friend's face, and in that moment, her decision was made. Turning and moving away as quietly as she could, she returned to her desk and quietly picked up the phone.

Like I said this is y first try at this type of Fic so I don't know if it'll fly so to speak. And for those who don't know, the song used here was "Wake me up when September Ends" by Green Day. TO say that I was surprised that that song came from those three guys would be an understatement, and it was the best one I could think of for the situation in this Fic. Hope ya like it.
