Silence and a Little More

by Luna

On a Saturday afternoon in November. Gray skies. In a little courtyard somewhere in the Hogwarts castle. Harry sits on a bench under an overhang and looks out into the pouring rain.

Draco walks up and sits beside him. "Cigarette?"

"Hmm? Oh, sure." Draco lights two cigarettes in his mouth, then hands one to Harry. Harry turns to look at him. He thinks, Why the sudden civility?, but doesn't say anything. The unspoken question hangs in the air between them.

"I just got sick of them, you know? Sick of pretending to be the perfect Slytherin Prince."

"I thought that was what you wanted."

"No. Never."

Harry takes a long drag on his cigarette, and blows a stream of smoke into the air. "Could've fooled me."

"I fooled most people. Only people who know are Snape and Dumbledore." He pauses. "And you, now. I think that means I trust you."

"I'm flattered."

There's silence, for a while. Draco turns and kisses Harry, who doesn't resist. He returns the kiss, in fact. Eventually, Draco pulls away. Harry is the first to speak. "You taste like cigarettes."

"So do you." Draco looks away. "I shouldn't have done that."

"Did you want to?"

Draco thinks, Yes, but only says "Maybe" before he turns and runs.

Harry watches him go. He thinks, I thought this was the one place I could never have my heart broken.
