They say that the truth is eternal and ambiguous, that only dead men know the truth, but what if there is no truth? What then? Is the human race such that without the hope of finding the truth they would cease to be, that whether we know it or not we are all searching for the truth. Would a truth do, or do we have to find out the truth. If we find the truth what does that mean? What would we do next, assuming that our driving force is to find the truth, would we fade out then too? Is it destined that man will never find the truth which they seek? Who is to say that if they found the truth they would recognise it as the truth which they are striving to find? Man is such a creature as to never be satisfied. Lenin said that a lie told often enough becomes the truth, this is true, but would all men take the lie they hear for the truth, or would a select few recognise that it may be a lie shrouded in mystery and that the greater truth is still out there waiting to be found. The truth may not be out there to be found and if it is who says that it wants to be found. The nature of man is such that even if it is out there man may not be the type of creature to find it; that could be the greatest irony, he who seeks it the most cannot see it. That could very well be the truth about the truth, it could well be there right in front of those who seek it, but cannot be seen. The bible says that 'Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free', is this the case? Is the truth available to a select few and of those few only the truly deserving find out what the elusive truth is? Would man then be free of mortal worries, would he be a higher being? Is that what heaven is? Is it that religion strives to teach man how to be good enough to know the truth? If this was the case were some ancient people privy to some knowledge or experience that man is too corrupt now to see? Did these ancient people see that man would be a corrupt race and write down the secret for the truth for future generations? If the truth is out there, how will I know if I find it?

This was an outpouring of Mulder's doubt and fear, of the ideas that plagued his existence and his quest. Scully had never really realised that Mulder suffered from the same doubts as every one else, he always seemed so certain and sure that what he was doing was right, that he was on the side of the truth. But now it seemed that Mulder was questioning the nature of the truth.

Scully put the file paper back down onto the desk and stepped back to look at file that she had put down. The very nature of this new case was different, it was not the same as so many cases that had come before. Now that she looked at it again she could almost feel the lack of hope and belief that came with it. The small handwritten note that had been attached actually stepped away from the supernatural and towards what she believed in, proof, scientific proof. When she had read it the first time she had felt pleased that she wasn't going to have to argue her point of view, because her point of view was his point of view. Scully sat down at this realisation, she felt hot and colour rose in her cheeks, her world seemed to spin and nothing seemed quite right. Mulder, it seemed, had lost his faith in there being a truth out there for him to find, or at the very least that he would be able to find or see it. If Mulder didn't believe in the truth, what did he believe in? Come to think of it what did she believe in?
