Mrs. Black woke up late on Mother's Day morning. Her husband always let her sleep in on this day, since her children were always at Hogwarts at that time of the year. Now, she yawned and got up, brushing her raven black hair and getting dressed. She put on a bit of make-up and headed downstairs. She passed through the living room and stopped abruptly. Her husband wasn't there. That was unusual. He was always sitting in his chair when she woke up – even when she woke up as late as this. She decided something important came up with the Malfoys or Bellatrix. Bellatrix, her wonderful little niece, was out of Hogwarts already. Only by a year, however.
Mrs. Black walked into the kitchen and stopped. She saw two things on the table when she walked in. Both of them paper, but they had a difference. One was rolled up into a scroll, and the other was just lying flat on the table. She looked at the flat one first. It was a note from her husband. Dear Sofia, I had to go to the Lestranges for a little while today. I'll be back soon. The rolled up scroll is from Sirius, so I'd be careful. Love, Amall. So that was where he was...the Lestranges. A respectable family, at least. She looked at the scroll. Sirius had sent it... Sirius was her oldest son, in his seventh year of Hogwarts. He was a disappointment to the family, thinking mudbloods and blood traitors were all right to hang around...
Brushing some hair out of her face, Mrs. Black picked up the scroll. He had never once sent her a curse through owl, so why would he start now? Besides, even though he was a complete disgrace to the Black name, Mrs. Black couldn't fight her motherly instinct. What if he was in trouble? She untied the red ribbon that was holding it together, unrolled it, and was met by a note written with green ink. She hesitated before reading it. It could be dangerous... But then, she'd have to take the risk. She started to read.
Dear Mom,
I know that I've been a disappointment to you. I'm not ashamed of that. As you know, I'm in my seventh year of Hogwarts at the moment. After this year, you won't see me ever again. So I decided to tell you exactly what I feel through this letter. Thankfully, I've gotten past the hardest part – getting you to read it. Look Mom, I hate you. I have ever since you disowned me. I don't know what kind of mom could do that to their child. If you even consider me your child anymore. Mom, you are the most hateful person I know, aside from Dad. You don't like muggle-borns, you can't deal with people who do like them, and you have the most mixed up priorities I've ever seen. You need to learn how to get over yourself. Mom, I'm not even sure why I'm calling you by that term. You've been absolutely nothing like a mother to me for the past seven years. But you know what, Mom? I love you. I don't know why. You've caused me so much pain... But I suppose it comes from being your kid. Remember that, Mom. You can also remember that this is my last letter to you. Happy Mother's Day.
-Sirius
Mrs. Black read the note over and over again. She was crying silently, and shaking slightly. She had collapsed into a chair earlier, and now folded the note up. Mrs. Black then put the note to her chest and bent – overwhelmed with her crying. She wasn't sure why, but the things Sirius said in there made her re-think her whole life. Should she have turned Sirius away when he was sorted into Gryffindor seven years ago? Why did it matter that much about blood? She just sat there, thinking about these things as the last words Sirius would ever write to her kept spinning through her head. Happy Mother's Day...
