Second Chance
She'd told Jonathan they were doing this for Clark. But now Clark wasn't going.
Martha sighed as she applied her makeup. She knew the heart-flutterings and disappointments of prom-time weren't important in the scheme of things. The fact that she'd spent her own prom being bored by some egotistical jerk certainly didn't matter now.
Still—dashed expectations could hurt so badly sometimes . . .

Martha turned slightly to her husband's voice, then smiled at her reflection in the mirror.

"Dad?"
"Yeah?"
The two were walking slowly back to the gym, Clark keeping a careful eye on Jonathan for any sign of ill effects from Dawn's attack on him. But there was something else on his mind, too.
"Dad, when I—I mean, when Dawn was—you know, in me—what did I—I mean, did she say anything, um, weird?"
Jonathan looked at him. Clark noticed uneasily that his father's lips were twitching.
The boy started to turn red. "Or—maybe I don't really need to know."
Jonathan patted him gently on the back. "I think that's best, son."
