He Hates
Peter Pettigrew hates Lily Evans.
She is beautiful as she walks down the aisle in a creamy white dress that probably cost more than Peter Pettigrew's entire wardrobe. Her father is beside her looking uncomfortable at being surrounded by wizards, and Peter Pettigrew feels nothing but contempt for him.
Peter Pettigrew thinks Lily Evans might hate him too. He hopes so, because then the way he feels about her is not completely irrational. He does not fit in her perfect world of handsome men and beautiful women; instead he must be relegated to the back of the church alongside her horse-like sister.
It is not hard to say why Peter Pettigrew hates Lily Evans so much. She has stolen something from him that was never his in the first place, and he hates her for having something he cannot have. She is beautiful and slim, whereas Peter is short and plump, and he hates her for catching the eye of the only person he ever really cared about.
Peter Pettigrew thinks he might love James Potter. He knows this is wrong in a way he cannot say, but he feels … something when those eyes are on him and him alone.
James Potter has never looked at him since Lily Evans came along.
Peter Pettigrew used to dream that James Potter might just – just mind you! – like him back. He used to dream of brown eyes and black hair, and he'd catch himself smiling oddly in the mirror. He used to dream of moonlit nights and laughing days. He used to dream that Lily Evans did not exist and never would, and that James Potter would look at him instead.
Peter Pettigrew hates Lily Potter even more than Lily Evans, because now she has broken all his dreams into pieces.
