At the Sign of the Falcon
by Saber Girl Leia
Finally I have written a shortfic/vignette/thing about one of my favorite books of all time, Mara, Daughter of the Nile! Now I just have to hope that someone reads and reviews it! Constructive criticism appreciated!
Btw, this is from Miphtahyah's POV.
Disclaimer: All characters and the Inn of the Falcon belong to the late Eloise Jarvis McGraw. And the characters belong to themselves, having (in Mara's case) fought quite hard for that freedom :)

Prologue
I see more than they think.
I'm an old woman, yes, but I still have my wits about me. Ashor knows that. So does Sashai.
It's good, I suppose, when they think I am senile. Makes them less cautious. I make sure nobody we do not know comes in when they should not.
And I watch the ones we let in, carefully. Sometimes I think I know more about them than they do about themselves.

I- It is So Obvious
He brought her to me one day. Mara, Lotus-Eye.
She is very good at acting the high-born part she plays, but her frequent slips into the language of the streets speak otherwise. Other than that, only a few lapses in her knowledge ever betray her.
And he corrects her. He, ever observant, certainly notices.
They sit together, and they laugh. But often their laughter turns suddenly tense. Unnaturally so.
And they do not even see it!
Oh, Sashai, he thinks he has everything under control. But I do not think he knows how bewitched he is by her. And yet I trust her. She has given me no reason not to.
It is obvious they admire each other's wits, not to mention each other's looks. When one leaves, the other, thinking themselves unwatched, stares out the door, looking lonely.
It is so obvious to me, the observer. How can they not see how in love they are?

So, what do you think? I know it was rather short, sorry. If people show interest in this, I may write more, either in this vein or different MDOTN stuff.
