Catherine padded her way to the front door. She liked it when it rained. The noise on the roof, curling up with a nice cup of hot chocolate…
"Gil?"
He stood on her front porch, soaked to the skin and shivering.
She took him by the hand and hauled him in, closing the door. "Gil, you'll catch cold."
Gil said nothing, allowing her to lead him into her bathroom.
"I was worried when you didn't come over earlier," she whispered, undoing the buttons of his shirt. "I'm so sorry, Gil."
There was still no reply. Catherine took off his shirt, and went to undo his pants.
"Gil, please talk to me. That's part of being in a relationship with someone. You can talk about things that hurt you." She looked up at him. "And I know that this hurt you."
"He just wanted to help," Gil whispered.
Catherine slid down his pants, until he stood before her in his boxers. "I know."
She put his wet things in a corner, deciding that Gil needed to get warm before she worried about his things. She led him into the bedroom, urging him under the covers.
"Stay," he murmured, when she turned to go back in the bathroom.
Catherine smiled softly at him, and removed her sweats and shirt. Clad in just a bra and panties, she slid in the bed, curling up next to him.
"He was so inquisitive. And so innocent."
"And it scared you because he reminded you of you," Catherine deduced, her fingers gently stroking his chest.
"I locked him up."
"You had good reason."
"I feel awful."
Catherine caressed his chest, kissing him gently. "I know. But Gil, you had good reason to believe he was guilty. I know you, and I know that you'd never lock anyone up unless you had good reason."
"And now he's dead."
"He died a hero. And he saved so many lives." Catherine took a deep breath. "And I'm so glad it wasn't you."
Gil looked over at her, at the scared look in her eyes and the look of love and devotion. He leant over and kissed her gently. "Couldn't have been me, Cath. Couldn't leave you."
She smiled softly at him and her finger poked his chest. "Don't you ever forget you said that."
He took her in his arms, holding her tight. "Promise. And thank you."
"I love you, Gil."
"I love you back, Catherine."
