The Letter

"My Dear Inuyasha,
It's been a month now since I've seen you, and you've been shipped off to war. I've missed you terrible and I wish you were here with me now. I think about you every day and wish for your safety. I'm worried about you Inuyasha; I wish you hadn't left me here, all alone, waiting for your return. I have wonderful news for you, I'm-."
Kagome passed and looked at the door wondering who could have knocked. She glanced over at the clock 8:30 PM, nobody called on her that late. She stood up slowly and crossed the room to the door. As she unbolted the door she started to worry. She wished Iunyasha was with her so she wouldn't be so scared. She opened the door and immediately wished that she hadn't. Standing outside her door were two men in uniform. "Mrs. Taso?" one man asked as the other dug around in his bag and finally pulled out a letter. "Yes, I'm Mrs. Taso." Kagome answered while her heart sank, some how knowing what was to come. The second man handed her the letter and she instantly knew what it said, she knew it was about Inuyasha. Slowly, mechanically she opened the letter and started to read it.
"Dear Mrs. Taso,
I regret to inform you that you husband has been killed in action at the Battle of Somme. We are very sorry for your loss.
Our deepest sympathy
Commander Bernadette"
Kagome just stood there, staring at the few simple line that were written to tell her of her husband's death. Did they think that those few words would make it all better? How could he leave? "Ma'ma?" the first man she didn't even realize they were still there. "Thank you for coming gentlemen, if you don't mind I'd like to alone now." she said. "We understand Ma'ma, we're sorry for your lose, goodbye." They turned and walked away into the night. She just stood there staring, then she turned and walked slowly inside. She sat in her chair and just looked over the letter she had been writing to him. She slowly picked up her pen and started to write.
"I'm pregnant but I guess you'll never know that now. You will never get to meet our child. I was so trilled when I found out that I couldn't wait to tell you, but you hadn't written to me yet and I did not know where to send a letter. When I got your first letter I decided to wait to tell you so you could concentrate on your work and come home quickly. Why did you leave me here, all alone to raise our child? A child who will never know their father? Why Inuyasha? Why?"
While she wrote this she started to cry. As she wrote last line she broke down and started to weep; for Inuyasha, for herself and for her unborn child. Once she had stopped crying, Kagome carefully folded and sealed the letter into an envelope and set it in the fire. As she watched it curl and turn to ash she caught a glimpse of her writing and then it was gone. The ashes from the letter stirred, lifted and danced in the air as a breeze came through the still open door. She saw them blow away, up through the chimney, just like the pieces of her broken heart.
