Death Surveys her Domain

The cold seeped through the Viper's cockpit. He knew it would kill him long
before his oxygen ran out. He no longer had any feeling in his hands or his
feet. It would be painless and he would slip away. Lee smiled. Didn't sound
so bad.

After that first battle with the Cylons, at the Ragnar Anchorage, with a
nuke headed straight for him, he had accepted his fate and been ready to
face death. Instead, Kara had raced in and saved him.

Since then Lee and Death had a mutual relationship.

She was a fickle creature, unpredictable, her ways known only to herself.
She stole through the fleet claiming her prey, with no apparent reason, no
logic, and too often Lee was her instrument. They continued their dance and
every now and then he flirted with her.

Over the last few months, in some of his more morbid moments, especially
after his father had been shot, he had often wondered how she would finally
take him. He had always assumed it would be quick and violent, not this
quiet slow fall.

As a child he had seen a picture of the Battle of Telemon, "Death surveys
her domain". A tall, pale-skinned woman, with long dark hair flying around
her, walked over the battlefield, weeping for the fallen.

He had felt so sorry for her. The lonely woman standing over her dead. He
had thought a lot about that picture lately. Lee understood how she felt.
How many had fallen? How many by his hand? How many had he failed to
protect?

That was why he had started the book, his testament to the dead. As long as
that book existed, those who were lost would live on. It had been his duty
to preserve their memories. His penance for the Olympic Carrier.

And now he was paying the final price. This time there was no Kara to save
him, no last minute rescue.

There is no noise in space. Endless it stretched out before him. He closed
his eyes and let icy fingers caress his flesh. Soon, he would be with her.
