Title: Nightmares and shadows

Author: Pilotslover

Summery: Sleep is comfort, life is an uncertainty. (vincent one-shot)

Disclaimer: Everything that is recognisable character wise belongs to Square, for if I owned Vinnie he'd have his own TV show.

AN: Umm, hi. (Waves nervously) I'm PL and I usually hang out in the FF IX section, just thought of this and thought I'd post it up. Please Enjoy!

The darkness, the sanctuary of sleep was a blessing; in sleep everything you experience can be nullified, sleep dulls the pains of life. Sleep comes with perils of it's own, however these can be justified as being nightmares whereas in life the nightmares are far to real and there is no place in which amnesty can be claimed. Outside the comforting embrace of sleep my nightmares lurk, within me they growl and snap like wolves at my soul.

A child stands against them, a child with a wooden sword as a deterrent against their attack, trying to stop the wolves from biting. Its shoulders sag as exhaustion overwhelms it slowly; the wooden sword a marble deadweight in its hands. The Wolves draw in near; Chaos snaps at the Childs heels and it is close to dropping the sword and running, but ceasing it's hopeless defence means the death of others and it does not want that on it's conscience.

However, a sickening certainty dawns on the soul as the child realises that one day the sword will become too heavy, it will drop and there will be no defence for the outside world. Chaos snaps its mighty jaws again and the child responds to hefting the marble heavy sword and swinging blindly; the sword catches a gross foreleg and Chaos stumbles away, but there is no victory, as I know he shall be back and angrier then ever.

One of the pack steps forwards, it usually lurks at the rear as it seems most docile, "I will help you." The wolf's visage ripples and changes to grow into the Galian beast; purple fur shimmers as it moves towards the child. "I will not fight your soul any longer, Vincent." I have never heard this before and the Childs visage grows into mine. "They all seek to control you, but I am content to be summoned occasionally," My first, Galian beast, the easiest now to control but in the past the hardest; the only one now I would consider myself capable of dealing with.

"Why help me?" The child is back, its small form still sagging as it holds the heavy sword.

"Chaos would kill himself, me with it."

I concede this point, Chaos is strong and foolhardy, lacking foresight and planning. The child sheaf's the sword and steps forwards as Galian beast lowers it's head to be petted; a hand snakes out and in a moment the pact is made. Child and beast stand side by side; I am no longer alone in my quest it sounds ironic that I have made a pact with Hojo's parasite, no matter how clichéd it sounds it is the lesser of all the ills.

For now, the child has assistance in it's fight; the demon's tail swishes from side to side in an almost lazy way as the heavy sword lightens and turns to metal. We could well succeed for a time, even Chaos will have issues fighting my new found confidence, which is momentarily restored by a kindly gesture. Tomorrow somehow seems brighter, more welcoming; the shadows seem to have shortened and my days no longer seem quite so nightmarish. Yet I am not so foolish as to believe this is the end of my turmoil, eventually the sword will change again as the defences once again begin to fail.
