Disclaimer: I do not own any of the Harry Potter books or the characters in them (hehe, it's weird writing this for the first time after reading so many of them).
A/N: this is the first chapter of my first fic, so it'll be kind of short and weird.
Chapter 1
Hermione quickly walked down the empty hall, clutching her Defense against the Dark Arts textbook against her chest. Her eyes flitted around the hall, checking to make sure that no one she knew was watching. If word got to Harry and Ron that she woke up at 7:30 that morning to talk to a professor, she would never hear the end of it.
Finally, she reached the entrance to the new DADA professor's office. She tightly gripped the cold, silver handle with her free hand. As she pulled the heavy, wooden door open, she called out to the new professor.
"Professor Navis?"
When she heard no reply, she took one tentative step into the dark and gloomy office.
"Professor Navis? I need to talk to you about the exam we had yesterday..." Her voice trailed off when she realized that no one was there to hear it.
Hermione was sure that she had told the professor that she would visit him today.
She walked over to the far end of the black desk, wondering if maybe he left a note for her. Although he became their professor just two months before, everyone knew he was a very polite person.
Hermione was suddenly aware of a dark brown mass of ... what is that? ... on the floor beyond the desk. She trailed her long fingers on the top of the desk as she slowly walked along its edge. She was deep into the room now, far from the warm light coming from the door. It was dark; she couldn't see a thing.
So she reached into her robe and slid out her faithful wand, "Lumos." She bent forward until the light hit the floor. Then, she immediately dropped it and gasped.
It was Carina, a fellow Gryffindor, and she was lying rigidly on the cold floor.
Hermione's wand rolled down and lit up the back of the desk. She sucked in her breath again and whispered "Professor...?"
Hermione wanted to believe that she was wrong, but it was, indeed, Professor Navis. The once handsome professor was now on the floor with a line of blood trailing from his open mouth and a broken mahogany wand at his feet.

I know it's a really short first chapter, but I wanted to end it here. I'll try harder next time... If there are any mistakes (and I know there are many) or if I got something wrong, please tell me!
And I know 'Carina' and 'Navis' are stupid names, but I'm using them for a reason (maybe it's a stupid reason). If you know what it is and if you can figure out Navis's first name, then you are one smart person!
I want to hear from anyone who read my first chapter, even if you only read the first paragraph. And I want to know if it's too descriptive or just too wordy and if I should tone it down. Thank you!
