"Selphie, when we get on the train, we're going to your new home. Think of this as a journey into your future. Your dad and I have waited so long just to have the chance to know you and love you, and we'll do our best to give you whatever you need." The woman had tears in her eyes as her grip on the child's hand tightened. Selphie looked up at her, innocent, clueless, and maybe a little sad, and smiled. She only smiled, because she didn't know what else to say.
As they filed onto the train, they were surrounded by random crushes of people, but her new mother's hand did not let go of hers. She trusted and followed the grip, because she didn't know what else to do.
The woman led her to a rather lush hallway, with thick carpeting. Selphie's toes went past the ends of her too-small sandals and she curled them into the shag with the mirthlessness of any little girl. The expression on her face did not change, and she still didn't say a word.
"You're so quiet," the woman remarked. Selphie turned and looked up at her, acknowledging her statement with an expressionless nod. She then turned away. The woman looked a little sad.
"Are you sad, Selphie? Don't you want a family?" The little girl frowned, and looked the woman straight in the eye.
"I miss Irvy," She responded simply, leaving the woman with a raised eyebrow.
"Is that one of your toys?" She asked.
"My best friend." Her gaze focused on the small bit of the world outside the train's windows that her height allowed her to see. The woman released an imperceptible sigh of understanding. She shook her head. She took the little girl away from her best friend. It made her feel strangely guilty; after all, this child was accustomed to the life she led and was given no time to prepare for the idea of leaving the Centra orphanage from where she'd been adopted. She leaned down a little and picked Selphie up, holding her and letting her see out the window. At first, her small body tensed with nervousness, but then her mother began to sing.
"Train, train, take us away..."
xXx
I didn't create Selphie or the train song, but I did write the story. You can sue me, but it's pretty much guaranteed that you won't accomplish anything. Ja ne. :p
Additionally, I was inspired to write a vignette about each character that takes a facet of their personality in the game that goes unexplained and elaborates on why they are that way. If anyone would be interested in reading a series like that, please let me know. Thanks.
