Why She Kept Her Head Down

Chapter 19: Will You Wait?
The week seemed to be dragging on, like a neverending maze of some sort. Kagome trained as hard as she could, day in and day out. Rei could tell that the sessions were wearing her down, but she just wouldn't take breaks, she trained as long as she could until he himself had to step in and make her take one. So of course today was no different.
"All right Kagome, time to take a break now. Come on, you'll be able to train again in ten minutes,
okay?"
Kagome sighed and dropped her hands that were in position to punch the punching bag again.
"Fine. Hey, um, can I use your phone?" She looked a little anxious as she asked this.
Rei eyed her suspisciously when he saw her nervous little quirks showing.
"Why? Who are you going to call? It better not be an international call."
"It's not, I just...I just need to call someone. He's probably really worried about me and I need to tell him that I'm safe."
Rei breathed in with relief.
"Oh, well, just be careful. I can't keep track of all these people who come in and out and there have been some cases of bugging."
"Bugging? Why?"
"Well, boyfriends or whoever is abusing some of my clients sometimes catch wind of them training here, so they bug the phone lines in an attempt to find out what's going on. That's only happened a couple of times though, but depending on how crazy your step-father is, ya never know."
"Yeah, I don't think they know though. I've been very careful."
Kagome walked to the phone and began to dial. She heard the rings of the phone from the line and
began to feel nervous. Why? Why should she feel nervous, this was Inuyasha after all. It didn't
matter though, it was the fact that it was Inuyasha that made her so nervous. She didn't know how to
say what she wanted to say to him, how he would react, or how she would react to hearing his voice.
She knew though, that no matter what he said, she couldn't waver. She couldn't break down over the
phone and cry out to him. No, she had to be strong for him, and for herself.
Hello? She heard his familiar voice ask.
"Hello Inuyasha. It's me...Kagome."
Inuyasha couldn't believe his ears. Kagome?! His Kagome?!
"Kagome! Where are you?! Are you all right?! You have to tell me where you are so I can come and get you?! Has those bastards done anything to you?!"
She wanted to cry for Inuyasha to come and get her, that 'yes' her father had done something to her,
but she couldn't.
"Inuyasha, calm down. I can't say that my father hasn't done something to me, but I am as all right as I can be at this point. I'm sorry for worrying you."
Inuyasha thought he would cry with relief, something he would've never thought possible.
"I'm glad you're okay. Where are you? Do you know?"
"Yes, I do know, but I can't tell you. Inuyasha you can't come here to be my brave night and slay all of my demons for me, I can't, no, won't allow it."
"What...are you saying Kagome? Are you saying I should just leave you to those bastards?!"
"That's not what I'm saying at all. When I first arrived to your city, I was just some weak little
girl. That's how I was overpowered by them in the first place. But I'm not a little girl anymore,
you've opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities that I never thought possible. I thank
you for that Inuyasha, because of you I won't ever be afraid of anyone ever again. When I came to
this new and frightening place, I thought I would dye. I wanted only to see you, then I knew I
could dye in peace, but I found someone to help me Inuyasha. He's a trainer by the name of Rei.
Since i have some experience with kick-boxing already he's going to help learn even more and with
any luck, I'll be ready to face my step-father."
Miroku had been right, Kagome really was tougher than she looked. He didn't really doubt this, in fact part of him had known it all along. He was still scared for his Kagome, but he also had this feeling that he shouldn't be.
"But what if you don't come back Kagome?"
"I will do my best to go back to you Inuyasha. Will you wait for me?"
"Yes, I will."
"Even if I die, will you still be happy for me and move on with your life?"
The question had caught him off guard and he wasn't sure if he had heard right.
"What? Kagome what are you saying? How could I be happy?"
"If I died, wouldn't you be happy that I wasn't still under their control anymore? Either way, whatever the outcome of this fight, I want you to be happy for me. Will you promise me that?"
Inuyasha smiled at her strong words.
"Yes, I will be happy for you, no matter what."
"If I do win, you'll know. However, if you don't hear from me two weeks after the last phone call I make to you from here, then forget about me Inuyasha. Forget I ever existed, after all, I'm good at staying invisible remember? It's why I've kept my head down all these years, so I wouldn't be important to anyone in case I met my demise at the hands of those monsters."
"Yeah, but I could never ignore you. Despite your best efforts to be ignored, you stand out way more than you think. I would've noticed you even if you never had bumped into Kikyo that day. I can't forget about you Kagome Higurashi and I shouldn't ever have to. Now go train hard so you can kick Naraku's and that sadistic son of a bitch who calls himself a father's ass. I'll be expecting to hear all of the details when you get back."
Kagome smiled at the confidence in his voice. Did he really believe in her that much? Then again, so so does her trainer Rei. Maybe she could beat her step-father.
"Thank you for your confidence Inuyasha, you don't know how much better I feel from hearing you say that. I have to go now, goodbye."
Despite him not wanting to let her go. Let her go back to that monster's grasp, he had to. If he didn't let her do this on her own he may lose her forever for not having faith in her. "Goodbye, Kagome. I love you."
He loves me. I love him too. There's no way I can lose this fight. She turned back to her trainer,
Rei, who wore a big cheesy smile on his face.
"What? Were you listening in on my conversation?!" She went over and playfully hit him with false anger.
She could never be mad at Rei, he was one of the few men she trusted and looked up to.
"You never said not to listen! So, he your boyfriend?"
Her cheeks lit up with embarrassment.
"Ohhh! So he is your boyfriend! Well, isn't that deja vu all over again? Anyways....HAAA"
He busted out with a surprise attack, his fist traveling to her shoulder.
She brilliantly countered this attack by swinging her fist up to block it, strong and unmoving as it held his arm aside from his intended destination.
Rei began throwing various attacks at her, and she countered each one of them. She then to attack
him, forcing him to counter her strong and forceful attacks. She had such speed and grace, she was
surprisingly strong for such a young girl. He suspected this came from her years of abuse, as most
of the women he had trained over the years became very strong and forceful during training. Finally,
she won out and struck him hard in the face. He staggered from the force and dropped his stance.
"Oh! I'm sorry, I thought you'd be able to block that!"
"Kagome, you don't need to apologize. It just means you're improving." He looked at his watch.
"My lord where does the time go? You have to go."
Kagome went over to Rei and looked at his watch. She shrieked when she saw the time.
"Man, I hope I can make it! I can't take another beating!"
"Did...he beat you yesterday?" Rei asked reluctantly.
"...Yeah...He did. Bye."
Kagome ran out and down the sidewalk, praying she wouldn't get a replay of the night before.
"Late again?"
Kagome turned from the staitcase she was hoping she would be able to climb without being noticed when she got home and saw not her step-father, but Naraku.
"Yes, traffic was bad. Hard to cross the streets.
"Now that sounds more like an excuse than the truth." He walked over to her.
"It's not." She continued to climb, but felt a hard tug at her hair.
She cried out in pain.
"You've become a little too ballsy lately, you know that? I think you need a little reeducation,
don't you?" He threw her to the floor.
She backed up against the wall, her step-father's beating she could handle but Naraku's were much more crueler. She barely survived the last one, he didn't usually step in for their father, but when he did, chills ran up her spine from the look he got in his eyes. She stood there and faced him, not willing to back down.
"Well, since father's not here, I'll just have to put you back in your place tonight."
He picked her up by her neck, making her struggle for breath, and banged her head countless times against the wall. He punched her in every place his fist could reach. She fell to the floor. He dragged her by her hair arounf in a circle, she screams pouring throughout the house.
"Is everything okay down there?"
Kagome looked up from her spot on the floor to see her mother. She stood there, looking fragile and pale form lack of nutrition.
"Yes mother everything is fine. Now please leave me and my dear brother alone."
She prayed that her mother would just leave without trying to help her daughter.
"...Okay..." The frail woman turned and returned to her room, shaking her head the whole time.
"Dear brother? Well, I'm honored that I'm so dear to you my dear sister. Now please try to keep the volume down so we won't alarm our dear mother. We wouldn't want her to get hurt now would we?"
Naraku took a lamp off of the table and smashed it over Kagomes head, almost knocking her unconscious,
but unfortunately for her, it didn't. He dragged her to her feet and slapped her several times,
sending her flying onto the couch. He climbed on top of her and sat on her arms and legs, not letting
her have any chance or struggling against him. He pulled out a pocket knife and showed it to her,
gliding it softly against her cheek.
"Now relax if you don't want me to cut that pretty little face of yours. I won't rape you, I don't like sloppy seconds from a little whore like you. Besides, I'm sure that your pussy is still sore from last night from the way you were doing screaming last night, am I right? You probably enjoyed it, didn't you? You little slut."
He led the knife down her neck to her chest and cut her shirt exposing the tops of her breasts.
He casually dragged it along the top of her left breast. He covered her mouth when she let out a
shrill scream.
"Now now, remember mother."
He dragged it across the other breast. Kagome cryed out in muffled cries of agony. Every sharp cut
covered the next in a never ending sea of pain. Her mind became numb as her eyes became unfocused,
looking at the wall behind Naraku as he continued to mar her creamy white skin. After he grew bored
of her lifeless state, he dragged her to her room and tossed her in, carelessly.
"Goodnight, dear sister."
