A/N: Another fic. Got inspired. Second O.C. fic.

Mother

Ever since he first came to Newport, Ryan had always been jealous of Seth.

He knew he shouldn't have been. Seth was a sarcastic emo geek who was obsessed with comic books and talked too much. He was unpopular, and never really lived until he was seventeen. Ryan had done many things before Seth. He'd kissed a girl. Smoked. Gotten laid. Had too much to drink. Ryan had almost every reason not to be jealous, but Seth had one thing Ryan didn't.

Seth had a mother.

Of course, Ryan had one, too. But not like Seth's. Ryan's mother made him do all of the housework, let her boyfriend hurt him, and barely talked to him. All she ever really said to him was to get up and get ready for school or to hurry up with dinner. Sometimes all they ever did was yell at each other. Ryan's mom was irresponsible, and let him do many things-smoke, drink, and probably, if her boyfriend didn't hide them, do drugs. Of course, Ryan didn't do all of those things. Much.

Seth's mother, on the other hand, was completely different. Kirsten rarely made Seth do housework, unless it was to chop vegetables or set the dinner table or bring in groceries. She had real conversations with him, about what was going on in Seth's life. She welcomed friends, and didn't smoke or do drugs. Although she drank on occasion, and on whatever ocassion it was, she drank. A lot. But whenever Seth drank too much, Kirsten became angry, and he would end up getting a lecture and grounding. Kirsten was very protective of Seth. Ryan remembered the first time when he came to live with them, and she didn't welcome him at first, as she thought that he would be a bad influence on Seth, since Ryan had just stolen a car and all.

Ryan's mother was never protective of him. She let in an abusive boyfriend, never once caring about how Ryan was being treated by him. She was selfish.

Ryan would watch the Cohens. He's watch as Kirsten asked Seth how things were going between him and Summer. When Seth had ended up drunk at some old man's retirement party, Ryan watched as Kirsten attempted to sober him up, then punish him. He'd watch as Kirsten would ask Seth if Summer would like to stay for dinner.

Ryan knew that Kirsten saw him as a son. And he knew that he and Seth were treated equally. But he felt as if there was something missing.

He had not known Kirsten his whole life. She did not give birth to him, she did not feed him or dress him or buy him toys when he was little. She didn't name him. She didn't cheer for him when he learned how to walk and she didn't help him when he tried to say his first words. He did not have that mother-son bond that most boys do. He never did. Not even when he lived with his own mom.

He wanted to go back and build a solid relationship with his mother. He wanted to be loved by her. He wanted to be a son to her.

Ryan wanted a mother.
