Title: Santa's Little Helpers

Summary: Just a short fic explaining the origin of the "elfs" of the North Pole.

Disclaimer: don't own it, don't wish I did, cause then all the fangirls would come burn down my house.

A/N: This is just a mindless little drabble that I felt like posting. It's actually kinda stupid—ok, a lot stupid—but a few of you might enjoy it, so this is for those few. You've been warned. Muwahahahaha. (Oh, and it's certainly not my greatest writing, as I wrote it quite a while back.) Wow…I wonder if anybody is still reading this! Haha!

Have you ever wondered why Santa's little helpers are called elfs, when in fact they more resemble Dwarves? Then this story is for you. I came across a few crumpled papers one day searching through one of Gondor's oldest libraries, and decided to copy them here for those who did not have such an opportunity.

Here follows the last note ever made for the History of the Naugrim.

'At the time when the last of the Eldar departed Middle-Earth over the Great Sea, many of the race of the Dwarves had forged great friendships with the Elves. So great was this bond between the two races, that the Dwarves were sore displeased for the fairest race to forever leave them.

'"Of a surety, if the keepers of all that is good and fair in this world depart, then all that is good and fair shall depart with them," some of the Dwarves bewailed. The Elves had taught them to love nature and to give back what they take.

'The Dwarves begged the Eldar for something to remember them by. The few remaining of the Elves gathered together shortly before they would forever depart the circles of this world, and decided to bless the Dwarves.

'With their last great magic, the Elves bestowed upon the Dwarves a closer resemblance to themselves, being made more fair, with no beards (which afterwards some of the Dwarves regretted most); a longer longevity, though not immortal, for that power belongs to Illuvatar only. But, most importantly, the Eldar gave to them the name of "Elfs."

'"May the eldar ever be remembered by thee and thine deeds," they spoke in departure.

'After all of the Elves had gone, many Dwarves migrated to the very north, for they were quite hardy in the cold and snow, and used their skills there to make many beautiful things…'

Here the page ends, and despite many day of searching through the library, I still have not been able to find the next page, if there was one.

But from this note, it can be assumed, and has, that the elfs of the North Pole are direct descendants of those Dwarves from long ago, blessed by the Eldar.

don't be too harsh—it was your choice to read it, even though I warned you it was stupid. :-P lol
