I have only been watching 'Sliders' for a few months now, but I felt compelled to write a story based on this series. I love the characters (especially Quinn Mallory) and wanted to put them in an unusual situation. Thanks to Meg and all of the reviewers who have been nice enough to review all of my other stories! Please read and review! Constructive criticism is ALWAYS welcome.

Disclaimer: 'Sliders' is NOT mine, but the creation of St. Claire Entertainment and the property of the Sci-Fi Channel. I have only borrowed the characters for a time.

Rain hit the windows, violently, as the pair of windshield wipers furiously washed the water away from her line of vision.

"Avenie." A masculine voice pulled her from her reverie. Avenie glanced over at Quinn who had taken his eyes away from the road just long enough to address her.

"Yeah?" She answered back, gripping his hand that rested on the console between them. He glanced over at her again with the gentle touch of her hand in his. A slow smile came over his face.

"You're so quiet," he turned his gaze back to the road. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine; just thinking about tonight. I-I really enjoyed it, and I wouldn't mind doing it again." She glanced down at her lap, shyly. She could feel that color rising to her cheeks. Why did she always feel so childish around him? She had known Quinn all of her life, but the prospect of being more than friend with him was still new to her.

"It was fun," he agreed, squeezing her hand gently before letting it go. "We just have to take it slow and be discrete for awhile." A shiver crept up her spine as she was reminded of the subject, which she had fought to put out of her mind for the last six months.

"I don't want to think about it anymore. We've fought with them for most of our lives. Why can't we just focus on what's important right now instead of worrying about what might happen?" Although her tone was an angry one, inside she felt anxious and almost vulnerable. Tears stung at her eyes. Quickly wiping them away, she fought the panic that she could feel rising inside of her.

"It's a reality, Avenie. There is going to be a time when what I've created is found out. They'll kill me; both you and I know that. After I'm gone, they'll be able to get to you; force you into things that you would not imagine. You need to be safe. I need to know that you'll be safe." A deafening silence reigned over the interior of the car.

"I'm not saying that I won't do what you've asked me to, but-" she stopped, unable to go on. Tears could be seen tracing a slow path down her cheeks. She wiped them away with the back of her hand and forced herself to continue. "You shouldn't have to die! You're the only person who really cares about me, Quinn! How am I ever going to start sliding and move on if you die?"

He quickly grasped her hand again and held it tightly.

"Avenie, it's going to be okay. Whatever happens you'll be taken care of. I promise." She glanced at him and he gave her a reassuring half-smile. Locking gazes with him, she could see that his smile did not reach his clear blue eyes. He knew what was coming, and he couldn't guarantee that Avenie would be truly safe it he was taken away from her.

"I don't want you to leave me alone, Quinn." She felt vulnerable saying it, but she knew that he would want her to be open with him. "Your discovery was supposed to be a gift to our broken world, but instead it's brought nothing but constant fear into our lives!" With that, she turned away from him, ripping her hand out of his grasp. She stared out the side window, watching the rain drops as they collided with the window and slowly snaked their way down the glass. Once, she had thought that their lives could become truly perfect, but now she had no way of knowing the events that would unfold and shape her future.

Suddenly, a loud series of "honks" emanated from their car. Her gaze darted to the windshield in front of her. Through the darkness and the raindrops that continued to pound mercilessly against the windows of the car, Avenie could see a single pair of headlights heading toward them. The car was coming at them head-on and showed no signs of slowing.

"Quinn!" Avenie yelled, wondering briefly, why he had frozen.

"I know! I see it!" She could hear the fear creeping into his tone. Only then did it occur to her what was happening. This was it. An overwhelming feeling of foreboding came over her. She knew then that her life would be shattered.

"Quinn I-" she began, locking eyes with him. Before she could finish, the force of the impact threw violently against the side of the car. Hitting her head on the side window, she slumped down in her seat; the darkness enveloping her almost instantly.

Hope you liked it! I'm still trying to sort out some of the plot details, so it might be at least a week before I update again. Please review and tell me what you think! Thanks!
