The Mortal Shell

Prelude

He couldn't believe it. Lowering his gaze to his closed palm he grasped the captured object with a fierce grip. He couldn't wait to arrive back to the village. Couldn't wait to show it to them. Couldn't wait to show it to her.

She will be...very happy...

Almost there.

The forest seemed too long. Too big. The hidden village before him behind all this heavy vegetation was too distant. He began to push himself faster, but instead it seemed to have a reverse effect.

Why am I so slow...?No, I am not slow, just excited and anxious...Have to keep a clear mind.

Yes, almost there.

The demon further rushed himself. Even so, he felt his pace was not quick enough. But he knew he was fast. One of the fastest demons alive. Maybe not the strongest, or smartest...especially not the smartest, not most demons are...but definitely the fastest. He could have passed a human three times and that unsuspecting mortal would not feel even a draft.

He should have been there by now...

Then he halted. The object in his palm began to emit purple knives of light through his fingers.

No...others may know of it now...

The Shikon jewel shard shone with a greater brilliance, then died to a dull glow. Even so, it was still visible through the demon's semi-transparent palm.

He began to dash through the forest faster than before if that was even possible. But this run was not fueled by the desire of arriving in the village, it was the desire of escaping the demon of greater power than his that now pursued him. It had sensed the jewel shard from the beginning and now that it was within its sight, illuminating its taunting yet alluring aurora, the pursuing demon has decided to take it.

I had been running around in circles...the jewel holding demon thought. This demon had me trapped in an illusion I couldn't out run no matter how fast I am.

He halted again and tried to pinpoint his opponent's movements. It seemed to be everywhere. This illusion was throwing off his senses. It didn't matter how fast he was, if trapped in an illusion there was no where to go and if forced to a fight, there was no where to run.

No...I must not give up! This jewel shard is for us...it's for Furiae...for our happiness...

The other demon attacked unsympathetic to his prey's thoughts, not that they were readable but the expression on his face was even as he fell dead, the glow of his semi-transparent body dimming just as the jewel shard that was stolen from his grasp.

Not so far away, a piercing siren-like scream was heard that seemed to forever echo through the night.

...Furiae...
