Beep-Beep Beep-Beep Beep-Beeee

Hailey lifted one eyelid. Her left arm flopped down off the alarm clock. Her hand felt around the area where it was now placed. It was cold compared to inside her covers but she soon found what she was looking for. She pressed the button.

"…That was great. Its from their new album – a must buy. Well, now for Monday's 4 – 30 news… 'A man has been arrested after'…"

Hailey snuggled under her covers again as the radio blasted on.

"Why do I have such an early job?"

She asked herself out loud while turning over.

"…Because you love it"

Who answered, was next to her. He was Tom. He had no idea what she actually did for a living, and she wasn't prepared to tell him, yet he knew she loved it.

"Sorry Tom, I didn't mean to wake you"

"Sure, sure. You always say that. You've been saying that for the last seven years"

Hailey sighed. He was right. She leant over him giving him a kiss, then climbed out of bed.

"I love you, now go back to sleep. I doubt it'll be quiet for long!"

She walked over to the wardrobe and pulled out some clothes. She slowly opened the door and crept over to the bathroom, past the other bedroom door. She didn't make it. As soon as she had got one step past the door there was a call.

"Daddy!"

She let out another sigh and carried on walking. It was Ben, their five-year-old son. She refused to see him in the morning as Daddy did that. She got up too early for them both to get up, so the easiest thing was to let them both fall asleep again. Half an hour later she was out of the shower, dressed, and eating breakfast. She didn't see the point in eating at her work, even though it was available. At home she could chose what she wanted and help out in the morning even though she wasn't there. She would get two breakfast bowls out, with spoons and lay them on the table, with a glass for Tom and Ben's favourite plastic cup. She would get out the breakfast boxes and put them next to the refrigerator, which had the milk and juice in. After this, at 5.30AM she would pick up her bag and car keys and quietly go out the house. At 5.50AM she would arrive at her place of work. This is where her life as a 30-year-old mother and wife was left behind, and her life as Colonel Jennifer Hailey-Johnson in the United States Air Force began.
