Frailty
What is humanity?
What does it mean to be human? Where is the line between humans, demons, and angels. Is a species that has sporadic mass genocides for the pettiest of reasons worthy of being called human? Of something so neutral, held in balance between human and demon. That is what humans are. Neutrality, a balance between the light and the dark. Yet, no human can truly be balanced between these two opposing forces.
Darkness and Light, two forces that exist in constant opposition. Neither can exist without the other. For as long as there has been light, there have been shadows. Only in the darkest night can a light be seen in its glory. A flickering candle, struggling to exist in the smothering blackness, its light shining out as a testimony to its unearthly beauty. Its strength is one more powerful than the sun, because it is so fragile.
Is humanity a state of mind? Where, if so desired even the most evil of man can still be considered human by his own standards? If, suppose, during a war, each side casts the other side as evil, as something foreign and therefore must be despised. To one side, the other is evil and its own side is good. Are they still considered human when they slaughter the side of good, when they themselves are good?
I have seen my Light in my Darkness. The flame is small, barely struck. The Darkness has it enclosed on all sides, yet I can see it start to catch the wick. Its brief light determined to exist in this room of burnt out candles.
Or is humanity a falsehood. Something that is considered true only to calm oneself from the inevitable. That there is not good or evil, only actions, and how one responds to these actions. And if there is no good and no evil, there can be no neutral. No humanity.
Outside this room there is light. It blinds and it burns. Dark spots dance in front of your eyes at the glaring sight. Yet, these too, get absorbed into the light. Yet, one remains. The longer you stare into this light the larger the spot becomes, until it takes up your whole vision.
Am I human?
I will take this delicate, newborn flame, and nurture it in the Dark, for it is wasted in the Light. I will take this flame and soon it will grow into a brightness so great that all the world will see. And I will covert it as a dragon coverts its horde. Through this I will see the Light and I will be freed from the eternal darkness.
No. I am myself. No more and no less. My actions will shape my world and through my world will others realize the worthlessness of the word 'humanity'.
And you can no longer see Light or Dark.
To do this, I shall become the very devil himself.
Only Shadows.
