Chi-Chi

By Phèdre Nó Delauney

Chi-Chi sat next to Goku on a couch in Bulma's living room. They were waiting for the results to the tests Bulma had just run on Chi-Chi. Goku was holding Chi-Chi's hand tightly, in fact, he looked downright frightened. After all, it had been only an hour ago that he had found her unconscious on the kitchen floor. He had immediately picked her up and taken her to his childhood friend, Bulma to see what was wrong with his wife. While Goku seemed terrified, Chi-Chi forced herself to remain calm. After all, it could be any number of things.

Then Bulma looked up from her computer, smiling. "I have the results, Son-kun, Chi-Chi-san." Her smile widened. "You're pregnant, Chi-Chi-san. Congratulations!"

Chi-Chi's eyes widened in shock. Pregnant? Then she rolled her eyes as she heard Goku ask what pregnant meant. She tuned out Bulma's explanation as she began thinking about the little life growing within her. The child would look like Goku, of that she had no doubt. She hoped it wouldn't take after Goku in the brains department. But no, she thought, Goku isn't exactly dumb; he's just never really had a proper education. After all, she only needed to explain things to him once before he caught on. Yes, Goku was very bright; he just never learned what others grew up knowing. She was certain that if their child grew up with a normal education, he or she would probably be the smartest in the class. After all, she thought, Goku's education had generally consisted of martial arts and fighting techniques. It was hardly any wonder he that was so strong and powerful.

Chi-Chi paused; Goku had been hurt so many times. And it wasn't limited to battles either. She had often seen him come home, his clothes bloody and torn, completely exhausted from a day of training. Her hand fell to her stomach as she thought of their baby in that position. No, she wouldn't allow it! She couldn't just stand back and let this child be hurt. Fighting was just too dangerous! True, it was fun and often exhilarating. In fact, fighting had brought her and Goku together! Well, perhaps she could let their baby learn, but only after he/she was old enough to decide on his/her own and fully understood the dangers. Perhaps after he/she had gotten a firm academic background.

"Chi?" Goku asked, a little worried. She hadn't said anything for several minutes now.

"Yes, Goku?" Chi-Chi smiled up at him.

"Are you okay?" Goku asked softly.

Chi-Chi leaned against his strong frame. "I'm fine, Goku." She pressed her face against his chest happily. "I'm just fine."

"Would you like to stay for dinner?" Bulma asked.

Goku looked down at his wife, still cuddled against his chest. "No thanks, Bulma." He said, "I think we'll go home. Thanks for the help."

"It was no problem, Son-kun." She said, surprised that Goku had turned down a meal.

"Come on, Chi." Goku said gently. "Let's go home." Chi-Chi just nodded, still snuggled against him.

This is basically an idea a got a while ago. Chi-Chi changes quite a bit in the period between Dragonball and DragonballZ. She still goes after things with the same single-minded determination, just her focus shifts. This is really just something I came up with as a reason for that shift. Although, really, I think Chi-Chi is very over-dramatized. She seems to be a one-sided character for the most part. We very rarely see anything other than the frying pan wielding, screaming banshee in either the anime, manga, or fanfiction. I think there's a lot there that we don't see, otherwise Goku, Gohan, and Goten would be very happy to get rid of her. Okay, enough rambling.

I could continue this, but I'm not sure I should. I'm not usually very good at finishing things. So, a little poll here: Should I continue this, or leave it as a one-shot?

Thank you for reading!
