Neji/Hinata
Set during the chuunin exam battles, Hyuuga Neji vs Hyuuga Hinata.
"And if your opponent is Neji," Shino said to Hinata. "Give up."
Because he will kill you.
Hinata faces off with Neji. She stares at him, this opponent she cannot hope to beat- even if she had the power to, she would not; could not bring herself to hurt him. She has long since watched him- when they were young, and as they grew up. Since before Naruto, he has been the boy genius she's admired; something she will never be- confident, and powerful. Since her aunts' whispers of how she must not defy family convention- split family members must be kept apart from the main family. They are inferior. Since he might well like Hanabi anyway, her own talented younger sister. Because I'm the inferior one, her whispered self thinks.
He has been her training partner, and before that, cousin. Too bad family only causes his glare at her to intensify. She can see the precise moment when he recalls, and all the humiliating memories of their family come rushing back to him. They are betrayed by the movements of his eyes, those white eyes of the split clan they share. Those eyes which absorb but do not reflect. This isn't my fault, she thinks. But it isn't his either.
"I will fight you," she nearly whispers.
He glares, furious to have to bother with an unnecessary match. "You cannot win," he says, staring straight at her. "Your destiny is to be weaker than me." He circles. Destiny, he thinks to himself. He knows he is gifted, and he believes in his own talent. He believes in destiny, and fate, because it has worked all his life. He knows full well that even his father's death can be explained- there is no use trying to fight destiny. What he does not know is how he can have feelings for this girl, a Hyuuga from the main family, and how his feelings fit into the greater scheme of things. They don't, he concludes.
And to Neji, what goes against destiny must be killed.
