Janet closed the door to her office with a sigh. She wasn't sure why she bothered. So far she'd had two patients…for the week. It was Friday.
She'd just walked to the café for coffee, but out of habit she checked her phone for the light that would indicate a message; and a possible patient. She didn't need the money. She and Cassie could easily live on her savings. She missed the rush that came with saving a life. The feeling of knowing that a person was alive because of her; that she'd triumphed once more in her mission as a doctor. Ever since the arrival of the Aschen and their advanced medicines she'd felt useless. Her hopes soared when she saw the glowing LED on the phone. She tapped the button and Jack's voice filled the office with a succinct message.
"Hey Doc, the cancer's back. Gimme a call."
