As it got nearer to dusk, Jas saw Illian on the horizon. We made it! I cannot believe that we made it! Then she led Shadow to Illian instead of riding him, making sure that he got a good rest from carrying her. "When we get to the city, Shadow, I am going to find a good Inn where we can both rest from all of the adventures we've had on our way to here. You deserve it." As if Shadow once again understood her, he whinnied and prodded the ground. I am sure that he understands me. Too bad, he cannot talk English. Then Jas and Shadow rode on to Illian and reached it just in time, for the Seanchan were about to attack. Luckily, Jas and Shadow were safe from them because they were on the opposite side of the attack. In addition, Jas joined in the attack, killing an unbelievable five hundred Seanchan. Then it was dark

When she awoke, Jas felt woozy. She was not used to fighting scores of Seanchan and having already killed a score of Trollocs and one Myrdraal. Then she noticed her surroundings. She was in a cave

And there was somebody near the mouth of it. When Jas called out, they jumped and as if they were surprised and came scuttling back to Jas. "Who are you?" Jas asked. "My name is Showld. I am a Seanchan, and I'm not going to hurt you." Jas noticed the slurring of the Seanchan's words. Then she noticed that there was something around the Seanchan's wrist that linked to Jas' neck. "What are you? What's this?" However, the Seanchan would not answer, and Jas decided to let it slip. Then she went back to sleep, pondering about what happened to her.

When she awoke, Jas heard two voices outside the cave. She got up, wondered if Showld was out there, and started walking. After the first step, she all of a sudden got sick and fell to the ground, moaning. Well, looks like our damane has waken up. Showld said. We must not injure this one, for it is one of the strongest, said the other voice. "Yes, master." Showld said. Then they came to Jas, gave her water, and brought her back to bed.

At one time during the night, Jas woke up in a cold sweat. She had dreamed that Seanchan had captured her, and a chain had been attached to her neck, and when she tried to walk, she got all sick and could not walk without falling down in pain again. However, when Showld put the bracelet that was attached to the other end of the chain, Jas could move without getting sick. She had also tried to take the necklace off, but she got sick again. She could not get it off, and she got sick again. Nevertheless, she had also noticed how Showld took the bracelet off her wrist, and, at night, when Showld was asleep, Jas tried to take the necklace off of her neck and... It came off. Jas decided to put the necklace on Showld's neck and she started to run away, when the man whom Showld was talking to a few days before came walking into the cave. Jas had not noticed the other blanket on the ground beside Showld. "Hello, young one. I am your master, the master of Showld. My name is not important, for you will only acknowledge me as "Master". You will listen to me and do everything I tell you to do. Is that clear?" Jas nodded. However, before her new "master" could come any closer, Jas took a club she found on the ground and smacked the man in the head, knocking him out cold. Jas found her belongings, took the food from the two Seanchan, and left, whistling for Shadow.
