The two men slowed as they saw a rider leaving a house yard. Surprise showed on the face of one of them. As they came abreast of each other, the man leaving the yard smiled and said "Hey Chris, what brings you this far north?"
Chris Larabee just smiled glad to see his old friend. Shaking his head, he answered "Been up a bit farther north looking at horses for the spread I'm building. Oh, Ben Stewart, Buck Wilmington," he introduced. Since it had been about two years since he had seen Ben, and that was in Virginia, he asked "What brings you this far north? I didn't think you'd ever leave Virginia."
Ben laughed and said "Someone decided she wanted to be closer to her grandfather. So she moved, convincing Michael and Eric to come with her. Dad sent me to help watch out for her."
"So where's Alex? I would have thought he would've come out with her."
"That's right, you haven't heard. Alex gave up medicine since he hasn't been able to help her. He's in New York going to Law School."
Nodding in understanding, Chris asked "Where you heading now?"
"Town," Ben replied, "Looking for the little brat since she's not here. More likely she's at the saloon learning to play poker from Sam, the town marshal."
Chris laughed and said "You don't mind if we ride with you, do you? We were gonna stop for the night anyway."
"No, I don't mind the company," Ben told him.
They rode in silence the short distance to town.
They headed straight for the saloon and walking in, Ben started laughing. Brandi was right were he figured she'd be.
Walking into the saloon behind Ben, Chris stopped dead in his tracks seeing Brandi sitting at one of the tables.
Buck looked at his friend asking "Chris?" Following Chris' gaze, Buck smiled and said "Well now, I can see the reason you stopped suddenly."
Chris turned a frosty glare to Buck.
Noticing everyone at the table looking up to the door, the petite blonde looked up and through the two pony express riders standing across from her, and she smiled. She got up from the table and walked over to where the three men were. Looking slightly chagrined, Brandi said to her uncle "Ok, so you found me Ben. It was worth a shot."
"It was a good try little one," Ben told her with a smile.
She looked at the other two men with her uncle. Recognizing one of them she gave a shy smile, and only said "Hi Chris."
She had been attracted to him twelve years ago when they first met, she had been only four years old in human years for this life, and it wasn't something that hadn't changed in the time since. Now, though, she wasn't a little girl or even a young lady per say even if she was only sixteen for this life. She was in reality very much older, though she wasn't sure the exact number, just that it was several million. Her heart stopped and then started racing at the sight of this man she was very much attracted to, and had fallen in love with, when she looked up and saw him.
Though he knew the age she told people here, he also knew she was older than that, he had found out when he first met her, but he thought she was only about ten thousand years old, not her true age – it wasn't something that was just told to anyone. He was only told the age he was given for her because he found her left on the rocks, he was a friend of Ben's, and had seen some extraordinary things she was able to do, so he asked. He wasn't looking at her like she was sixteen, he looked at her like the adult he knew her to be. He saw her when he was in Virginia two years earlier and she was beautiful then, but she was even more so now. He had fallen for her twelve years ago, but now he was gone. He smiled at her and finding his voice he only replied "Hi Dee."
