Given…Not Sold…

Satoshi Hikari, seven years old, stared blankly at the wall of his elaborate bedroom. His large, ocean-blue eyes darted from one item to the next, taking it all in. For this would be the last time he would be able to. He was about to be given—no—sold to this Commander Hiwatari. Satoshi climbed up on his bed in his darkened room, just staring. Taking in what he had.

"Satoshi…you're getting a father."

"I have a father."

"You had a father."

He didn't have much. He had a struggling single mother, who was trying her best to get more money. She wasn't selfish, no, but she was nearly delirious with worry. Ever since her husband died, she had been losing money. Of course, she hadn't started worrying until a year ago, when the alarms went off. The Hikari family was going bankrupt. So, she did what any delirious-with-worry, panicky woman would do—sacrifice.

"I don't want to."

"Satoshi, this is your destiny. It was foretold that you had to be given away."

"If it was foretold, why are you trying so hard to make it true? If it was foretold, it would just naturally happen, wouldn't it?"

What happened to his father? All Satoshi knew were two things—his name was Reino Hikari and he died a year before Satoshi was born. None of those things was useful to talk about. After all, you can't change the past. Well, not his past, anyway. Satoshi used to dream that someday his father would show up and rescue him.

But now, he came to his senses. His father was a Hikari. Hikari were cold-hearted beings. Yes, Satoshi admitted that he himself was cold. His father, even if he was alive, would never come back for him.

"Why are you selling me to him?"

"Who am I selling you to?"

"You know…that Commander Hiwatari."

Commander Hiwatari...Satoshi didn't know who he was, really. The first time he had seen him was there adapting-your-adoption meeting. He had toured the Commander's huge house. Satoshi was quite impressed, but there was no one to talk to…to love. Of course, the Hikari cannot love. But aside from that, he knew nothing of Hiwatari. He didn't know his personality, or anything.

"I'm not selling you to him!"

"So what are you doing, giving him to me?"

"No! I'm not giving or selling you to him!"

That's a lie. You are selling me to him, for your own selfish reasons. I must live with him...because you're the one who needs the money. Because I'm a Hikari, I must be cut off from my family. I hate you for that. But you know what? You're right. I'm not being sold to him.

I'm being given.
