"Misao-chan!"
She barely heard the voices calling her name frantically as darkness swarmed all around her. Her head spun. The voices were getting dimmer, and unseen hands were clawing at her.
"Misao!"
Someone was calling. Someone…
"Aoshi-sama! She's turning blue!"
Aoshi made no comment. He focused his attention on the little shivering form in front of him. They had found her, after hours of searching, buried under three feet of snow. The snow storm had caused a snow slide off the mountain where she loved to play…
It was like a kaleidoscope.
Sometimes, colors burst forth, then as quickly as they had come, faded back to black, white and gray. Sometimes, all she could see were shapes and colors, sometimes images flitted across her mind. Her father, her mother, Jiya, Okon, Omasu, Kuro, Shiro, Shikijou, Hyotoko, Beshimi, Hanyaa…and…and…
Aoshi wrapped her small body in the coat he had brought along to shield himself against the harsh cold.
"We need to get her back to the Aoiya immediately. Okina will know what to do"
Even though his voice was quiet, Omasu and Okon could feel anxiety and worry practically radiating out of their young Okashira's body. His usually unreadable mask was on the verge of cracking…
Was she dead?
She didn't know anymore. She only knew that it hurt to be alone there, wherever 'there' was… It hurt to think. It hurt to breathe.
So she let herself drift, like a fallen leaf on a flowing river, letting the gentle currents take her wherever they pleased.
Voices were still calling her name. She tried to answer, but she was tired…so tired…
Aoshi was starting to panic. It was a foreign feeling, unfamiliar, unpleasant, weak. He had not let himself feel that way ever since the death of his parents.
Misao was moaning softly, her little face was deathly pale, lined with pain. Her long, wet, icy braid brushed against his skin and he shuddered at the contact.
"Misao. You must be strong."
"Misao. You must be strong."
She heard the deep, soothing voice vaguely as she wandered from the realms of darkness into warmth and light.
As if from another person's point of view, she watched herself pick wild flowers, while four ugly looking men and a black haired teenaged boy sat a little distance away, watching over her silently.
She watched herself turn with a brilliant smile and ran towards them, giving the flowers to her four best friends and hugging the black haired boy tightly.
The scene changed abruptly, and she was thrust into a place where all she could see was swirling snow. White, freezing snow, that was so heavy and so cold. It suffocated her.
All she could think of now was to fight it. She needed to get out of this frozen prison…
"Okina. We've found Misao."
Okina's took one glance at the nearly frozen little girl in Aoshi's arms. He nodded curtly and stood up.
"Place her in the futon. Hurry!"
"Misao…"
That voice again...
"Misao…wake up…"
She fought to open her heavy lids. Sunlight invaded her cerulean eyes.
Blue met blue.
Aoshi let out the breath he didn't know he was holding. He let a small smile lift the corners of his lips.
She was safe now.
His Misao was safe.
