I've always wondered what Nargles actually were, and what they did to people.

This story answers neither of those questions.

It does, however, tell one of the things Nargles are useful for.

Disclaimer: I don't own any of this stuff. :sigh:

Warnings: Mild Ginny/Luna.

Nargles------

Hogwarts at Christmastime was a festive, glittering place. Tinsel and holly were everywhere, lit by bewitched candles and accented by other tasteful decorations.

It was among these trappings that the mistletoe lurked.

It really wasn't noticeable unless one was looking for it. Ginny certainly wasn't. All she really wanted was to get in a last hour or two of studying for her final tests before the end of term. For this reason, she had escaped the Gryffindor common room. At this time of year even hoping for a quiet moment there was useless. She had chosen a table in a dim, abandoned corner of the library, and set to work.

Intent upon her studies, she didn't notice the person approaching her table until she spoke.

"Good evening, Ginevra." The voice was soft, but Ginny was still startled. She looked up, blinking text-blurred eyes.

"Oh, hello, Luna."

The other girl walked around the table and pulled out the chair next to Ginny's. "How long have you been sitting here?"

The question was unexpected. "I don't know..." Ginny checked the clock behind her. "An hour and a half, I suppose."

Luna's already large eyes widened a fraction more. "It might not be too late..." she shook her head. "It's lucky that I found you this quickly."

"What?"

The blonde girl waved a hand at the place where walls met ceiling. "The nargles, of course."

Ginny squinted into the darkened corner. Sure enough, pinned high on the wall was a sprig of mistletoe.

"You've been sitting here for long enough to be in trouble." Luna stated matter-of-factly. "But not long enough to be past saving."

Ginny couldn't think of a single thing to say to that curious pronouncement, so she settled for simply staring at Luna.

"I can help you, if you like."

Ginny found her voice again. "Help me?"

"Well, there's only one thing to do about nargles." And before Ginny had a chance to respond, Luna leaned forward and pressed her lips to Ginny's.

A second later, she pulled away. Ginny licked her lips and remembered how to breathe. She looked up to find Luna gazing at her doubtfully.

"You're probably all right now..." she said skeptically.

Ginny picked up Luna's train of thought. She took a deep breath. "But better safe than sorry, right?"

Luna smiled.

Ginny's last thought before their lips met once more was that perhaps Luna wasn't as out of it as everyone believed her to be.

I still want to know what Nargles are.
