Prologue:

Excerpt from a report submitted to the Department of Scientific Intelligence by Commander William Stryker:

...Upon the apprehension of the five male subjects of the Lot 23 experiment, my department has deemed the River Mead case closed. The five subjects have been relocated to a secure facility until their threat level is assessed. Given their age, all necessary educational and nutritional needs will be provided and a representative from the local Department of Human Services will supervise staff caring for the subjects.

As for the recon team sent to locate subject McGee, C., all evidence indicates that the subject perished in a fire just north of the city of Chicago. Recon operatives tracked the subject to the scene of the fire, which engulfed nearly an acre of land that utilized by the local power company. The extent of the damage and intensity of the fire left little hope for any survivors in the immediate area. It is suspected that the subject was victim of suicide, choosing self-immolation rather than facing prosecution in Colorado for the River Mead arsons...

Excerpt from William Stryker's personal log, recovered from an abandoned military base by persons unknown:

Success. The entire River Mead experiment must be classified as a complete success.

It's a shame Rainbird didn't survive his final encounter with Charlie McGee. I'm sure the old man would be beaming with pride, about his girl, about his boys. Kicking back, his feet on the desk, maybe enjoying a brandy with some of his former students.

Not that his former students had any more luck. Logan and those other brutes. Dolarhyde's been released from the hospital and relieved of duty. Fisk has made a formal request of resignation as well. I don't blame him. Not after what happened to Logan

The power. God, the power that child has. She could probably rule the world if she wanted to. So why doesn't she want to? Interesting to wonder why she doesn't use the power she has more often.

And Logan wants to go after her again. Ha! The man's skin was literally falling from his bones when his team finally got him to our medic and the bastard WANTS to jump back into the flames.

Speaking of Mr. Logan, it seems the encounter with McGee has revealed a little secret. His skin, the same skin that HAD BEEN falling from his bones, is healing. Healing.. .impossibly... incredibly... completely. No wonder the man's such a good soldier. It seems quiet difficult to kill him. He'd be a tank if he had something stronger than bones holding him together.

Again I wonder about people like Logan, people like McGee. Scientists are getting closer to figuring it out, I suppose. They've been searching for this mythical mutant gene for years. They really think they're onto something. And, you know, I really hope they're right. Genetic abnormalities can be isolated, eliminated, before they're passed on to the next generation.

At least I can rest assured that my own family is safe from this mutant gene...
