Too Late

Summary- Holly always meant to tell him how she felt, but now it's too late. (one-shot) Set after "The Opal Deception", so may contain spoilers!

This is my first Artemis Fowl fanfic, so please let me know how you like it!

Looking at the tombstone, Holly did not cry. She simply stood there, staring at it.

This gravestone was one of many in the Mud Man graveyard. It was the dead of night, so she would run a very small risk of being seen. Mud Men were horribly superstitious anyway, so she knew that, come sunset, the graveyard would probably be deserted.

Holly thought that she must have used up all her tears when Mulch had told her the news of his death, because now she had none left. She had gone beyond tears now. Crying, sobbing for hours as she had done when she received the news, was useless. It was all useless. He was dead. There was nothing left for her now.

"Holly?" Mulch spoke from beside her. "Are you all right?" He seemed to sense that he had said the wrong thing, and winced. "Sorry- I know you aren't. What I meant was, are you going to have another breakdown? Because, if so-"

"To you know how utterly insensitive you can be sometimes? I thought you wanted to 'offer emotional support'." Holly said irritably.

"I do!" he said. "That wasn't the entire reason I came, anyway. He was my friend too."

"I know." She said. "But you didn't love him the way I did."

Holly walked forward and placed some flowers on his grave. They were from her garden, and flowers of that variety had not been seen on the surface for over a thousand years.

"I never got the chance to say it when you lived. Now that you have crossed over into death, I can only hope that you can somehow hear me." She took a deep breath. Maybe she would cry, after all. "I love you, Artemis."

I guess that didn't really have too many spoilers, except that if Holly and Mulch were working together, it makes sense that he would go to Artemis' grave with her. I guess I could have made it someone else, maybe Folay, but I've always loved Mulch. Root would have been the obvious choice, but… well, if you haven't read tOP, I'm not going to tell you, and if you have, you know what I mean.

Anyway, that was angsty, wasn't it? Please review, and tell me what you think!
