The child lay still on the table where Alexx had left her. Tiny hands that had been playing such a short time ago lay still, curled into tiny fists that had fought for every precious moment of her life.
Calleigh stood staring down at the girl's face, still beautifully innocent even in death. A sob escaped her lips. Horatio looked up and met her tear-rimmed gaze.
"If we'd gotten there sooner…" She started, but he interrupted her.
"…We'd still have been too late."
He stepped away from the corpse wrapped his arms around Calleigh.
"There was nothing we could do."
