"Why can't we be together?" It seemed like such a simple question but every time Sam had the chance to ask she would back down. Who would have thought of Colonel Carter as scared? But that is what she felt every time she was with Jack. Scared. Scared of her feelings for him, scared that she would be rejected, scared that he would pull the 'I have a girlfriend' card again. Of course Sam knew why they couldn't be together, regs, but who cares? They had broken the regs plenty of times, why was this any different? Every time they looked into each other's eyes she knew that she loved him, so why is Sam the one wakening up late at night crying because of a nightmare where he wanted nothing to do with her?
These thoughts as well as many others were going through Sam's mind as she half listened to Jack's voice. He had noticed that she was being very quiet but decided that she was thinking about something important and didn't want to push her. Just as they reached the corner of the hall, where they parted almost every day to go to their quarters Sam stopped. Noticing that something was wrong Jack stopped and turned around.
"What's wrong?" Jack asked nervously. Sam looked very upset.
After thinking for a second Sam once again just gave a half smile. "Never mind." She said sadly turning and quickly walking away. Not sure if Jack heard her or not she mumbled, "It's just a stupid question I need to ask you." A single tear ran down her face, she was not sure if Jack was still watching her so she did not reach up to wipe it away.
Sam knew that they wouldn't talk about it again, Sam would be to scared and Jack would not want to push her to tell him what was going on with her.
