Ginger sat on her open windowsill, one leg hanging over the side of the house, her other leg curled close to her body as an armrest. Lois peeked her head inside her door.

"You ready Ginge? The cookies are going to get cold soon, and nobody wants cold cookies for a housewarming gift."

"I'll be down in a sec, Mom."

"Okay, we'll be walking so put on comfortable shoes."

Ginger hopped off her windowsill, slipped on a pair of sandals and joined her family out front.

Ding dong

A boy opened the door.

"Welcome to the neighborhood!" said Lois. "Your parents around?"

"Yeah, they're out back." He escorted Lois to the pool in the backyard, and then joined Ginger who had made herself comfortable on a tire swing.

"Hi," he said, "I'm Nick."

"Ginger."

"You need a push?"

"That would be great, thanks."

"No problem." Nick got behind Ginger and began to push.

Ginger was quiet for awhile, just letting the wind catch her hair. After a few minutes she realized that Nick was probably feeling quite uncomfortable.

"So, Nick. Where are you from?" questioned Ginger.

"We moved here from Vermont."

"That's cool," said Ginger jumping off the tire swing, "I heard it's really beautiful there."

"It is."

"Well, since I assume you're not finished unpacking yet, would you like to come over to my house and hang out?"

Nick smiled vaguely. "Sure," he said, "I'll just let my mom know."

Ginger nodded and watched as Nick walked towards his mother. She watched him intently as he turned around and walked back towards her. "Ready to go?"

"Yep. I'll follow you."

Author's Note: What do you think? This is my first piece of work on this website so please be kind. I know it's short, but the chapters should lengthen as the story moves forward. Not my best writing, I'm sure, but I'd like some feedback. Review please! Part two coming soon.
