FallenTruth: I don't own the Last Unicorn and wish I did. Anyhow sorry to make you read this it was in a random moment. There is just no defence.
What if?
She looked out into the distance, far away he was there waiting for her. Ready if she ever came back. What if she did? Would he welcome her with open arms or be cold? Would he understand? She looked up at the stars and could almost hear the waves crashing on the sand, but there was no sea, no sand, no Lear. Tears filled her liquid eyes something no unicorn had ever experienced. She cried. What if she had stayed a human? Well Lear would still be lying on the sand in a crumpled heap. What if she found Schmendrick and became human again? She stood in the forest frozen by her thoughts. She regretted leaving and regretted being a unicorn. How bitter this regret that no immortal should ever know for it would destroy them. She snorted softly listening to the breeze. She was the last unicorn in this place all of the others had moved on unable to bear being so close to where the red bull had been. Yet she was no true unicorn held down by her regret. What if she had never met the butterfly or heard his riddles? She would still be the last unicorn here, but there would be no regret. What if she took a chance and went back? She stood frozen as time passed.
She galloped along the roads faster and faster. She had to get back to Lear. He had to hear her words. Know her feelings. What if he ignored her? Then she would just call louder. What if he had left? Then she would follow always. She crossed the land going on through night and day until she was there. Until she heard the waves crashing upon the sand. She moved forward to the castle and stopped. It was a ruin with rocks lying everywhere. The gates had fallen and the stairs vanished devoured by the waves. The towers were haughty and empty. She walked in trying to find some hint of what happened. As she reached the courtyard she came upon a headstone. She stared at it seeing Lear's name on it. It read:-
King Lear
Last of his Line
Died Age 82
Still Waiting
This had never been in any of her imagining's he was always alive somewhere. She had never thought he would be dead. Never thought so much time could pass and seem like so little to her. What if she had only been faster? What if she hadn't been immortal? What if she died? Would she see him on the other side? The last words on the headstone struck her hard. He was still waiting? She could never die. Could she? What if she became human again? Tears rolled down from her eyes and she shook her head.
"I am sorry Lear. You will always be waiting. I can't live by what might have happened. Goodbye." She slowly walked away from the castle and the grave. Her forest seemed too close to that place of sadness.
Like all of the unicorns before her she moved on to a place far from there, where humans were unheard of and what if was only two words. She went to a place where at last the others could remove the regret from her. The regret of an immortal is especially hard to bear.
The End
