Painted Wings - Chapter 1

Lugging his violin case along the curb, a boy walked back to his apartment in which he lived alone. He did not mind that he had no one to share his life with, just being alive made him feel at home there. He stepped up the graffiti covered corridor and made his way up to the top floor apartment. He took off his startlingly white trainers and replaced them with a pair of house slippers, then went into the plain but homely apartment.

He sat on a squashy futon in the middle of the room and crossed his arms behind his head, maybe one day he would find someone to share his life with. That one special person that could change his life. Of course that would never happen because he had only just moved there.

A boy walked down the side of the main road, his shoulders hunched and his chocolate hair falling over his face. He rounded a corner and stepped into school territory, turned into the entrance and headed for his homeroom, sat down at his desk at the back of the classroom and opened his SDAT tape player. He waited for the classroom to fill up. As the teacher stepped into the room, the class stood up.

" Ohayo gozaimasu sensei." They droned monotonously.

"Okay then children, today we have a new student, lets welcome Kaworu Nagisa." A few sniggers passed around the classroom as the newcomer stepped into the light of the classroom.

Kaworu Nagisa, Kaworu of the seashore… thought Shinji Ikari.

"Please take a seat Nagisa-kun."

" Yes Sensei." He took the first seat he saw that was empty, the one next to Shinji. Shinji froze and instantly fixed his gaze on the huge blackboard that took up a whole wall of the average sized classroom. The new boy looked over at him for a few seconds and then turned to the front of the classroom.

His hair was a platinum blonde, or was it grey? His eyes were dark brown, or were they red? It was probably just the light in the room.

The two boys were the only ones not messing around with their strikingly red laptops situated on each and every desk in the classroom. A sudden movement on Kaworu's screen caused Shinji to look round to see what it was.

Hi Nagisa, you wanna watch us do volleyball club tonight? Y/N

Shinji looked over in wonder.

No, but thanks for your offer, I appreciate it. I'm busy tonight.

Could you come tomorrow then? Y/N

I have to go out tomorrow.

How come?

Because I have things to do.

And with that he shut his laptop and began staring straight ahead and ignoring the looks of distaste aimed at him by a small group of girls over by the window.

The last lesson that day was art, the easels stood up straight in rows like an army. Each member of the class made their way through the gaps like generals about to send them into battle.

The Sensei explained to the class that they could paint whatever they wanted but they had to keep it decent.

Shinji was about halfway through his picture so he hazard a glance at Kaworu's, he had nearly finished, Shinji gasped at what he saw. Two of the huge robots falling downwards with a blood-red background, two huge black wings and a person with a face covered by an expanding orange light, he was amazing at drawing, but what compelled Shinji to the picture was…
