Coming Now, Unto the End
Life was a game to Sawyer.
On the Island it was no different; the Island wasn't something to mess around with, a game most people really wouldn't want to play.
Sawyer's life had been hell after his parent's had been murdered. And after a while he found himself making up names for people. It was safer he told himself, a way to make sure he never got attached to anyone ever again. And as time went on, he found himself thinking-seeing-the rest of the world as a game: a giant puzzle, perhaps, or a game of strategy and cunning.
"It's all about how you choose to play your cards."
His dad had always told him that when they were playing a friendly game of poker: just the two of them , before that man came alone and made a mess of everything; that one wild card that can make or destroy your chances at winning the game.
He didn't really see the Island as anything potentially dangerous; it was just another player in the big game Sawyer played. He didn't realize until it was too late. Maybe if he had things would have turned out different.
He had learned long ago to make sure he was never careless: to be careless was to be dead. It was an essential rule in his game, and was quite important when he played the con-man. Pick only the pretty little Barbie doll wives that think the whole idea of getting the cash from their Ken husbands is their idea, then hightail on out of there and don't stop until you're in the safe zone.
But once again, a wild card had been thrown in. The kid had to come into the room, make him remember what happened to him, and make him realize that he was Sawyer. He had become the man he was hunting. Sawyer supposed he should have realized then to play the game carefully for awhile, don't make any big mistakes or moves. But like always he ignored that part of his mind. He supposed that that was what caused him to start the downfall into losing.
Life was a game to Sawyer. And eventually all games must come to an end.
