Kurt knows he's not normal. It's hard to forget when he has blue fur and a tail. Or when his mother tells him with sad eyes why he can't go outside and play, or why his father keeps the shutters closed all day. They hadn't wanted to send him to a foreign country to be taught by people they only knew by name, but they and he both knew that Professor Xavier's offer was the only chance he would ever have at anything even vaguely resembling a normal life.
When he arrived, the Professor gave him a gadget that made him look human, so he could attend public school without having to deal with humanity's increasing xenophobia of anything or anyone different. And sometimes, he can pretend he really is normal. But there are still times after school, when he turns off the image inducer and catches a glimpse of his real self in the mirror, and he remembers he's a freak.
But then he remembers Scott, who can't even pretend he's normal ever, but can make Kurt feel like they are. Scott, who kept him from leaving the school the first day he came, who was his first real friend, and who honestly doesn't seem to notice or care about the fur or the tail or the hands.
One day, he's going to tell Scott he loves him for that. He just hasn't worked up the courage yet. For now, though, he's content with waving to him after school, smuggling sodas when they think the teachers aren't looking, and touching him and knowing Scott won't flinch.
But one day, he will.
