Sunrise
None of his mornings had ever started out quite like this one.
Never had he felt such contentment and placidity as he did now.
She woke him up complaining of sharp, frequent pains and told him that it was time. They'd practiced the night many times this month, but he'd momentarily forgotten what they had practiced for all of his urgency and nervousness.
Warrick sighed as he held his new born baby girl in his arms for the first time after waiting all these months. He cradled her gently and kissed her nose as she slept peacefully; tucked in tightly by the soft pink blanket and her head covered with a pink striped cap on. Such a little beauty…his daughter. Catherine's daughter. Their daughter.
He turned slowly and watched Catherine as she got her much needed rest. He took in her features; Olivia's birth really showed her age, and her face was ashen and her body looked frail as her womb began to deflate from emptiness. Yet she was still the most beautiful woman in the world.
The labor had been long and painful for Catherine; twelve hours in labor and it took another two hours of pushing to get the baby out. At the expense of her mother's body, Olivia Denise Brown came tumultuously into this world changing his life for good.
"Hey baby girl," he whispered as Olivia opened her eyes. "I'm your daddy."
Olivia yawned and continued to look at him.
"There are things that I'm going to teach you, tell you, and do for you," he whispered. "And as much as I want to do all that right now, I can't. One day at a time. I mean you just got here."
The infant only stared up at her daddy and he smiled.
Catherine woke up slowly. She sighed and looked over to Warrick. She grinned slightly when she saw him doting over his baby girl. It warmed her heart to see him so happy and the fact that she made him happy made her feel beautiful and full of purpose. And even though she was still pale, weak, and sore, she knew that it was not in vain.
Warrick smoothed down Olivia's thick, silky, bright reddish brown hair, looking out the window. He knew what was out there in that big world, things that no one should have to know of live with for that matter, and a part of him feared for his little girl. He looked down at his sleeping child and vowed to protect her from all the evils that would come her way.
He sealed his vow with a kiss to her cheek and the tightening of her blanket.
He watched as the sun peeked above the horizon and when the rays reached him and Olivia, suddenly he thought, as he looked down at his sweet baby, the world right now as he knew it, was right as rain.
