SOS: I have absolutely no idea why I wrote this. Really. It was just too tempting, however, when I came up with the idea - plus, I'd been Role Playing on Neopets as Shizuka a lot, so I think I got her more in character than I would have otherwise. You'll just have to let me know X.x

Summary - When it finally occurs to Shizuka that she has no hope left, she makes it official.

Warnings - None.

Shizuka frowned.

She spread her fingers around the video camera, searching hopelessly for the correct series of buttons to activate it correctly. The temptation to ask Mother for help beckoned her emotions as she continued to try, vision shaky as well as her hands. But she wouldn't ask her, no; Mother wouldn't approve of her reasons. Mother would urge Shizuka to go and see her brother face-to-face, rather than sending a simple video tape.

Shizuka was frightened.

She didn't want this to happen. She didn't want to loose sight, or her treasured, silver eyes, and the look of a sunset or the smile on Katsuya's face. She didn't want to miss out on Mother's wedding to Takahashi-san, or the beauty of a rose opening up to the morning sun. She didn't want to miss any of that. She didn't want to be plunged into darkness, lost to the magnificent light of day.

But what could she do?

She proceeded in fumbling with the camera; glaring downwards from behind her glasses (She didn't know why she wore them anymore. They did absolutely no good, and were only getting in the way. Perhaps it was hope? Or pure habit?). Her fingers continued to slip and slide around, as if it had been coated with something to prevent her from sending this final farewell to her beloved oniichan. She let out a silent sob of frustration, as she cradled it in her hands. She leaned over, removing her back from the end of her bed, as she sat on the hardwood floor.

Shizuka buried her face in her hands, crying quietly, hoping dearly Mother would not come in her moment of frustration. Was this really it? Was it only going to be mere month before she literally could never see Katsuya again? Mother? The dog? The sunset? ANYTHING? She leaned foreword, and she felt her bare knees rise up to her chest, rubbing against her over-sized short.

It took her minutes to compose herself, after her realization had rocked her senses. This tape... it meant the end. This was her sign that it really was all over. She was going to be stuck, relying on others to help direct her through life, rather than herself. She knew it was coming - so why did it take so long to hit home?

Shizuka looked down at the camera in her hand, using the other to wipe her face free of tears. It was time, even she had to admit. Time to grow up, and simply admit it was over. She bit her lips, still looking at it silently. She sat there for a minute or two, and finally sighed in defeat. She sat the camera upon her desk, and positioned herself in front of it in her hard, uncomfortable, chair.

She leaned over, red hair swaying and brushing against the desk. She could barely see it, blurry but sight still somewhat intact, and it brought a small smile to her lips. This is for you, Katsuya, she thought silently. I'll be strong for you, and this will be for you. She stretched out her arm, and softly, and finally, found the 'On' button. The color burned in her mind, as she sat back down and looked into the camera, and focused on the light the same color as the button.

"Hi there, Katsuya! How's my big brother doing?"
