Sokka took a in a deep breath taking in the smoke and blowing it out gently from his mouth. He put his hand by his side and leaned back on a bench staring out at the ocean.

Katara was kneeling on the floor also starring at the ocean. she then stared at her brother since their dad left to fight, to protect them he has gained so many responsibilities and he thought that smoking and drinking could take them away, she got up.

"What the hell do you think your doing?" Katara screamed at him and took the cigarette away.

He looked at her and went back to staring at the ocean, Katara had noticed dark rings around his eyes and she felt like crying for what he has become. He was a fighter and he had been teaching the little kids in our city to fight but since the weight of the world hit his shoulders he just went downhill.

Katara put her hands in her jeans and walked away taking a trail to the beach. The wind was blowing her free hair around so she tied it in a pony tail, the wind then tickled her neck and she shivered. After a while she found herself at the beach she walked to the shoreline and took off her sneakers. Water bending was something in her blood and yet it was so weak, she tried and tried and it just didn't work the way she wanted it.

Her mother died when she was so young and all the water benders were off to war, no one was left to teach her. She lived in a small city practically in the middle of nowhere; the city was becoming so primitive their living in the twenty first centaury but what is holding not only her city but the world was this stupid war.

She got up put her shoes on and took a quick glance at the ocean before leaving. She felt alone and irritable, her brother was long gone maybe 'Gran Gran' would talk to her. She stopped where she last saw her brother, he had passed out she could tell it was from liquor he must of got it from some jackass. She picked him up which was something she had done so many times and got used to, she placed him in the passengers' seat and she hopped into the drivers' seat, started the ignition and drove home.

'Gran Gran' was waiting when they got there, she looked at Katara then Sokka and nodded her head in disappointment. She walked over to where they were and helped Katara bring in Sokka, once they put him in bed Katara asked if she could talk with her.' Gran Gran' got two glasses of water and they sat in the breakfast table.

"What is it young one?" Gran Gran asked. Katara looked at her with sorrowed eyes before she spoke.

"I'm worried about….Sokka and father, this whole war is meaning less why is the fire nation so power hungry?" water began to swell up in her eyes.

The old women felt her heart almost break for Katara, she has gone trough so much in her short life. She stood up and rubbed Kataras back and Katara broke out in tears and through herself into the old women. She thengot up and ran into her room and just cried into her pillow until she fell asleep.

So your not confused,

Modern day but they have powers and there is still a war. They are all the same ages, all I have changed is the time and surroundings, and yes they have guns. They mostly perfer the original martial and bending but the occasional gun will pop out.
