'A long forgotten laughter'
Rolls of thunder drummed across the distance; rain softly pelting against the glass window pain; counting for the silent flash of light illuminating the night-darkened room.
Inside, neatly tucked beneath the thick comforter and the arms of a lover, it seemed to the only awake occupant as if a game were in progress – a long forgotten children's game of tag.
The light pouncing in play, unsuspecting to dance with the shadows as it fell back in surprise. Chasing it back from wince it came. And the thunder, the thunder seemed to be its harsh laughter, as the light retreated to dash in and out once again in its rain game.
Like children in play, beneath the trees canopy and the familiar village grounds at night.
Like the flames that lit their night excursions at the center of their home, of the small hands that felt their warmth.
Yellow eyes, slit to the blade of a dagger to accommodate the darkness, watched in amusement, wishing the game to lull him to sleep, despite the harsh laughter in the growing storm.
What was it that kept him awake on such nights? The storm? Or the uncertain memories that threatened to consume him? Of children's laughter echoing about him in memory, of a past he had in childlike innocence. He shivered unknowing and shifted slightly as to not disturb his other, falling deeper into his lovers embrace, his soothing warmth.
But even the subtle shift itself was enough to rouse the slumbering phoenix, his arms tightening protectively about the raven-haired kitten upon reflex. Breathing in deeply, his breath tickled against Rei's neck, his eyes remaining unopened.
Softly, a kiss was placed upon his neck, butterfly kisses playing along his silken skin, calming the raven-haired youth within his hold.
He let out a sigh of sleep, closing his eyes to the rains taunting games, clutching the arms wrapped about him securely.
"What's keeping you?" His deep voice rumbled softly against his ear. Rei shifted again, turning his front to press fully against Kai's, lying his head between the crook of his neck.
"The rain."
A small sound vibrated from Kai's throat as a small smile fell across his lips, "It'll pass soon."
Another smile tickled against Kai's skin in a sleepy play, "Can you make it stop?"
A laugh shook from Kai, his hold tightening, "hn."
Gazing down at the sleep falling kitten in his hold, Rei giggled, placing a warm, yet chaste kiss up upon his lips before snuggling against him once again. "Hold me till it stops?"
Golden eyes once alight in the night, closed themselves to the shadows, turning himself from the rains game, and the children's laughter that echoed in his minds eye. And in a silent response, Kai pulled the slumbering kitten closer, never relinquishing his hold as the memories dissipated from the youth beside him.
The harsh laughter reminding him of a child's game of tag, and the unknown memories the refused to surface from long ago.
