Brokedown Palace

They're standing on the roof, drinking moonlight and semi-fresh air. Roger props his elbows on the wall surrounding the edge, peering down at neon streets. Mimi stands beside him, but she's leaning with her back against the wall, head tipped back to see whatever stars she can glimpse through the haze of city lights. Mark lets his camera linger on them as Mimi shakes out her hair, capturing the nighttime lights in loose, trailing curls. "So vain," Roger teases, but he quickly relents, sweeping her into his arms for a kiss. It's a good night; Mark wants more nights like this.

The Hours

The hours are long, the stories are stupid, and the pay is lousy, but at least Mark has a job, and at least he's working with a camera, instead of bussing tables. He's even saving a little money, living by himself—-he doesn't need much. Roger calls ("Surprise!") to say Santa Fe is beautiful; Mark should come visit.

"Can't," Mark says. "I'm busy being responsible."

He hangs up, knowing he was rude and not really caring. Silence falls around him like a too-hot blanket on an August night. The hours at work are long, but the hours at home are longer.
