Nightmares

Willie can hear him gasping, desperate, in the dark beneath his bunk. It wakes him, Danny's fear, and by now, shaking Danny awake to rescue him from the nightmares has become as much routine as the digging.

What is routine, too, is the way touching Danny's wide shoulders makes Willie's hands burn, and how Willie always makes himself let go the moment he knows Danny's awake. If he doesn't then, he can't imagine that he ever will, and – not here. Not when Danny's so desperately afraid of the dark and the night and the earth above him in his dreams.
